Supreme Court may hear case on school barring American flag shirts on Cinco de Mayo

A California school dispute that arose when students wore shirts emblazoned with the American flag on Cinco de Mayo could prompt the Supreme Court to take a new look at free-speech rules for high schools.

Ever since students protested the Vietnam War by wearing black armbands, the justices have said the 1st Amendment protects the rights of students to peacefully protest at school, so long as their actions do not lead to a "substantial disruption."

In recent years, however, some school officials have moved to curtail political fashion statements such as wearing T-shirts with Confederate flags or anti-gay slogans. They have argued that some limits were necessary to avoid offending other students and possibly provoking violence.

On Friday, the justices met to decide on hearing a case asking whether a school official's fear of violence justified disciplining students for wearing American flags on their shirts.

The amazing thing is that wearing an American flag T-shirt in America is controversial at all.

Well I certainly hope they remove any American flags from the courtroom, lest they show any sort of institutional prejudice to those making their arguments.

In fact, they should remove any sort of American flags or other patriotic symbols from the entire city of Washington DC, as these might prejudice one or more of the Justices as they are driven to work in the morning.

“Everybody wears one or they dont get to attend school at all.”

I appreciate the sentiments, but these days not being subject to liberal indoctrination six hours/day is actually doing the kids a favor.

“so long as their actions do not lead to a “substantial disruption.””

The disruption was originally caused by students with allegiance to mexico threatening students (some of them of mexican descent) wearing t-shirts with American flags.

So it was the “cinco de mayo celebrating” kids that initiated the “substantial disruption” yet the kids wearing the american flag got punished.

Blame the victim. Patriot-shaming. Teach Cinco de Mayo-ers not to be violent.

Wear the American Flag t-shirts anyway, and walk in with middle fingers held high.

Sick of this crap. This is America.

The Cino de mayo idiots can go the Hell back to their own country.

The crap started when the progressives of the mid-1800s to early 1900s imposed government-run, single-payer and socialist-entitlment schooling on the nation.

It only took one to three generations of SS schooling ( single-payer and socialist-entitlement schooling) to give the nation Woodrow Wilson, prohibition, the Federal Reserve, popular election of Senators, confiscation of state land for federal parks, and Franklin D. Roosevelt...just to name a few. By my grandmother's day the government SS schools were secular and today they are utterly godless.

With each generation the nation further circles the drain. Why?

Answer: If children attend godless schools they will learn to think and reason godlessly. They must just to cooperate in the godless classroom. At best they will learn to compartmentalize their faith.

Answer: If children attend socialist schools they risk learning that the same voting mob that gives them tuition-free schooling has the power to give them **lots** of “free” stuff.

Answer: Children in compulsory-use, godless,

What is needed is complete separation of school and state. ‘

Clothing is an expression of free speech. These matters should be decided privately between the parents and private school officials.

Imposing government dictated uniforms for children risks teaching the children to bow to government imposed restrictions on freedom of thought.

Axiom: It is impossible to have a neutral school. No school can be religiously, politically, or culturally neutral. Such a state of philosophic neutrality can not exist in the mind of any sentient human. For this reason there should never be state schools for the same reason as there should never be state religions.

Fundamentally government schooling is a First Amendment and freedom of conscience abomination!

ALL political speech is PROTECTED speech under the constitution.

It’s really just as simple as that.

That this made it to the Supreme Court at all shows just hoe far down the tubes our Courts System has gone.
