How about false advertising? How many times have I heard their ads say, “No (contractor) can pay to be on Angie’s list”, or words to that effect? This article directly disputes that claim.
It seems that Angie charges both subscribers and the companies she recommends.
Sounds like the wheels could be coming off over at Angie's List.

I have never liked these “referral” sites like AL and Yelp. They are going to be dominated by the most irritating complainers, some of whom are considerably more irritating than anything a contractor could do to you. This is done under the tacit assurance that you are going to be relieved of one of those things that life has to offer: That you have to be exceptionally careful of whom you hire and whom you let into your home to do work. And of course, the potential for extortion as Yelp does on a routine basis is tremendous.
When you ratify a belief in what such a service can do for you, you are saying “I trust these little poodles who text their cel phones every 35 seconds who otherwise annoy me any time I come in contact with them, you know, the kind of people who have the intellect to repeat any 0bama bumper sticker slogan, to make my life better.”
That’s just frickin’ dumb. The premise is, that a contractor whom you hire and does 96% of what you agreed to and gets over a hiccup or two, which is as good as it gets in the (ahem) real world deserves.....anything. That doesn’t merit a rave review nor a whining complaint pile. That’s just doing substantially what was agreed upon.

Angie’s list and Angie are liars. I can state just after the statue of Hussein was taken down the college kids at Vanderbilt who worked part time for Angie called me from a Vandy phone. They asked who my favorite HVAC contractor was. Well,they called my HVAC man and got his wife who runs the business. She called and told me they wanted money for them to advertise. She asked what did I think about paying. I told her that they advertised no contractor pays. She did not pay for an ad. I dumped Angie’s list during the trial period.

angies list is already having a value problem.
The HVAC company I work for here in Indianapolis has a listing on Angie’s list. We do not pay for the listing; however, if we want a bump to be on the Angie’s Listed top contractors, we better pay advertising fees. The companies who pay for advertising get ads in their booklet and mentions on radio or TV ads depending how big their
advertising dollars.
We do fine being a member if the BBB.
