U.S. Supreme court rejects challenge to Wisconsin voter ID law

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected a challenge to Wisconsin's Republican-backed law requiring voters to present photo identification to cast a ballot, a measure Democrats contend is aimed at keeping their supporters from voting.

The justices declined to hear an appeal filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, which challenged the law. The ACLU said it then filed an emergency motion with a federal appeals court to try to keep the law from taking effect immediately.

Republican Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel said the law cannot be implemented for the state's April 7 election because absentee ballots are already in the hands of voters but would be in place for future elections. "This decision is final," Schimel said.

Voter identification laws have been passed in a number of Republican-governed states over Democratic objections. Republicans say voter ID laws are needed to prevent voter fraud. Wisconsin's measure, blocked by the Supreme Court last year, was backed by Governor Scott Walker, a potential 2012 Republican presidential contender.

Democrats say voter fraud is rare and the rules are intended to deter voters including the poor, minorities and college students from voting, groups that are less likely to possess the necessary forms of identification but are more likely to vote for Democratic candidates.

The law would require voters to present one of a handful of forms of photo ID such as a Wisconsin driver's license, a passport, a military ID or an ID card from a Wisconsin university or college.

From Wiki:

State-by-state requirements[edit]

The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) provides a web page with ID requirements for voting in each state.[26]

Strict photo ID Photo ID (non-Strict) Strict non-photo ID required Non-photo ID required (non strict) No ID required to vote at ballot box

Then NCSL web site distinguishes strict from non-strict as follows:

In the "strict" states, a voter cannot cast a valid ballot without first presenting ID. Voters who are unable to show ID at the polls are given a provisional ballot. Those provisional ballots are kept separate from the regular ballots. If the voter returns to election officials within a short period of time after the election (generally a few days) and presents acceptable ID, the provisional ballot is counted. If the voter does not come back to show ID, that provisional ballot is never counted.[26]

In states with non-strict voter ID laws, other methods of validation are allowed; this varies by state. Possible alternatives are: signing an affidavit, having a poll worker vouch for voter, having election officials verify a voter's identity after the vote is cast, or having the voter return an inquiry mailed to their reported address. In states with strict ID laws, the voter is required to take additional action after the provisional ballot is cast to verify ID.

The NCSL places state-level voter ID laws in one of the following categories:

Strict photo ID in effect: Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. In addition, North Carolina and Wisconsin have strict photo ID laws that are not yet in effect.(WI now in effect)

Photo ID in effect: Alabama, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana, Michigan, Rhode Island, and South Dakota. Strict non-photo ID in effect: Arizona, North Dakota, and Ohio.

Non-photo ID in effect: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and Washington. No ID required at polling place: California, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming, and Washington, D.C. do not require ID to vote.

Funny how libs (Obama) wants mandatory voting that would require voter ID in order to punish those who Don’t vote, Their Base, the Gibsmedat crowd has to have ID to get their Gibs.

Don’t want voter ID because it cuts into their fraudulent voters....

Because they would have to make voting mandatory in order to get all their Gibsmedat base to turnout so they have to rely on outright fraud....until they get mandatory voting, which is WHY Bamster brought it up, he is the only lame duck that could bring it up.

Another conservative victory for governor Scott Walker

Scott Walker has defeated democrats/communists more than anyone in history and he's just getting started. He is the most impressive politician I've seen

Scott Walker has defeated democrats more than anyone to pass conservative laws, balance the budget, cut taxes, and turn a huge deficit into a surplus. Walker’s record is unmatched! The rest of those running for president are either marxists or just talkers. Actions and Results , a conservative record as governor are what matter. Talk means nothing

Another article on SCOTUS rejecting the challenge to Wisconsin Voter ID.

Now, if they could only fix that tiny spot (literally a ball point pen sized dot) that is the only place where the registrant affirms that he/she is a citizen of the US, maybe we’d get a handle on our voter registrations. Even the poll workers miss that on a busy day.

FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.

As it turns out, it won’t matter for the April 7th election because the DOJ in WI said there is not time enough to implement it. And the snowball continues to roll. because the Un-American Civil Liberties disUnion keeps filing attempts to block it which makes it go until just before an election when courts say it cannot be blocked and then it is too soon to implement it before an election and then the ACLU...an endless cycle.
