Now, 150 years later, the indigenous Ngai Tuhoe tribe in New Zealand is getting a new start. The government has apologized for its past atrocities, handed over 170 million New Zealand dollars ($128 million) and agreed the tribe should manage a sprawling, rugged national park it calls home.
Last year's settlement is one of dozens the government has signed with Maori tribes in a comprehensive, multi-billion dollar process described in a U.N. report as imperfect but nevertheless "one of the most important examples in the world of an effort to address historical and ongoing grievances of indigenous peoples."

It’s not all the same the world over. And many tribes, everywhere, were all but exterminated or enslaved. It’s harmed many generations and should be put right where possible. Don’t equate everything with inner city black freeloaders, race-baiters, rioters and thugs. They are a world of their own.
If the Maori want to remain a separate ethnic group and culture, then by the same definition applied to Whites, they are racists. And they have power to be racists through manipulation and blackmail of the self-loathing White power structure and intelligentsia.
As a New Zealand citizen living in Australia I’d like to point out that the article is a lot of bunkum. It is typical of the wall-to-wall slant of the ABC which is famous for its bias and downright falsehood. Berlin_Freeper is exactly right. New Zealand has been worked on for decades to accept this “victimhood” nonsense and it is largely based on revised history. I am one Kiwi who got out of the country (and there are countless others) because I was sick and tired of the constant in-your-face indoctrination with this rubbish. A whole generation has been worked on through the education system so that many of them now believe it. It’s a lie! I’m 75 years of age and I’ve seen the change first hand. The Maori people are now the most pampered people on the face of the earth. And just for the record, I’m no racist. Over the years I’ve had many Maori friends.

I recall when the Queen came to visit & Maoris lined the motorcade route showing her their @zzes, then complained that whites had no right to criticize their “native protest custom”.
Relations between whites & aboriginal peoples in Australia are at a far more mature level IMO.

I’m with you. It’s time to LET THINGS GO. The people living today had NOTHING TO DO with what happened in the past, and I’m not so sure that those primitive societies were so wonderful to live in anyway.
I’m curious where it ends though. Do the Irish get reparations from the English? What about the slaves the Vikings took or the Baltic tribes that were overrun by other tribes or the victims of Ghengis Kahn or the muslim slavers.
Because they used to be the prime slaughterers, and they disliked being replaced with people who were better at it than themselves.
And again, what great civilization and subsequent inventions and contributions to science did the Maoris come up with? Just asking
Yep...they dealt with that on Star Trek. They had beamed down to a dead planet, with zombies walking around doing nothing. They then learned that the people were controlled by a computer, because they were totally stagnant, like the Maoris, they concluded it was THEIR DUTY to wake that bunch up, out of their primitive existence - so they pulled the plug on the computer...and the people finally started living useful lives.

Getting beyond past grievances is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL for any culture to advance. You have to be able to let things go.
The BIG TEST in this century, as I see it, will be China. They now (or very soon will) have the capability to squish Japan like an insect, and they have more than enough justification. The question is whether they will do it...this will be interesting to watch. If they don’t, then they are CIVILIZED, if they do...then it’s business as usual.

White/Western Culture Guilt. Sickening. Don’t see it stopping either. Still too many on the right who are oblivious or “too busy to be bothered”.
So after the dust settles, what can we conclude from all the conquering, killing, and enslaving? My group of people, the Slavs, were conquered, killed, and enslaved by the Romans. Can I ask the Italians for some reparations for past injustices to my people that happened two thousand years ago?
Getting on with life and taking advantage of the inventions and civilizations of other groups is the answer. If the Maoris want to be victims for the rest of their lives, then that's all they'll ever be. They'll never make a positive contribution to the world. People who were living primitive existences for thousands of years always have a tough time adjusting to a new, modern civilization. But that is the way of the world.
Moral of story: it's better to be a survivor than a victim.
It would have to be connected to results, I think. If a tribe was manifesting collapse, literally unable to survive because if what was done to it in the past, then remedial help would be justified.
I believe the problem is real. But I also can’t point to anywhere it’s been properly dealt with. The Left always politicizes it and throws gas on the fire by creating dependency payments. And you know where that leads.
I just think what most people are disgusted with is not actually what any given people were, but what they’ve been turned into by the wrong “help.”
I wish I could point to an example of the right sort of help, but I don’t know of any. I know what it should be - assistance to enter capitalism in a safe way. But how to do that, when capitalism is only safe in general, not an any specific example of it? Not to mention the cultural problems of accepting capitalism at all, which despite much scorn, are real too.
The developed world has to create its own successful social security system before it can extend it anywhere else, and it most certainly hasn’t done that yet. What passes for social security now is social destruction - of ourselves and everyone we “give” it to.
My Congresscritter, a good progressive, has a couple of homes there. Maybe he should give them back.
