US does not want to see Syrian regime 'collapse': CIA

New York (AFP) - CIA Director John Brennan said the United States does not want to see a chaotic collapse of the Syrian regime as it could open the way to Islamist extremists taking power.

The spy agency chief said Washington had reason to worry about who might replace President Bashar al-Assad if his government fell, given the rise of the Islamic State group and other jihadists in Syria.

"I think that's a legitimate concern," Brennan said when asked if the US government feared who might succeed Assad.

Speaking at an event at the Council on Foreign Relations, he said that "extremist elements" including the IS group and Al-Qaeda veterans are "ascendant right now" in some parts of Syria.

"The last thing we want to do is allow them to march into Damascus."

"That's why it's important to bolster those forces within the Syrian opposition that are not extremists," Brennan said.

The US military is funding the training and arming of "moderate" Syrian rebel forces but the effort is only now getting off the ground.

Washington's stance is that Assad should have no role in Syria's future but President Barack Obama's administration and other governments wanted to see a political solution that would ensure a representative government, he said.

"None of us, Russia, the United States, coalition, and regional states, wants to see a collapse of the government and political institutions in Damascus," Brennan said.

I think this dude better go talk with his boss. From my perspective Obama is all about getting rid of Assad so some version of his beloved Muslim Brotherhood can take over.

I doubt it... Assad’s an ally of Tehran, and Obama’s not shown much interest in foiling Iran.

I think that’s what Ben Ghazi was about. CIA arms that Libya had they (Clinton et al colluding) to get them to the Syrian Rebels. That was before all this ISIS business, but I don’t believe Obama is any friend of Assad.

Obama and his cabinet & appointees & minions are worse than worthless; they’re downright dangerous.

Great leadership. Can’t even decide what side of the war they’re on. Since our weapons are ending up on all sides anyway I guess it doesn’t matter.

Putting this statement through the usual Obama Regime translator means they do want collapse so the radical transnational terrorists can take over. Of course, since Assad is supported by Obama’s Iran buddies, the issue has become muddied. What to do?

Name a single ME country that has a "representative government" except Egypt...

How can a "democratically elected representative government" come out of Syria with the complete chaos and fighting...

Plus it seems Mr. Assad isn't about to gave up his power and control...

I guess Brennan must be thinking of all those "moderate" ISIS fighters that will GOTV /S

“I guess Brennan must be thinking of all those “moderate” ISIS fighters that will GOTV /S”

C’mon..Mr Brennan should:

1. categorically define & articulate what he means by ‘moderates’. IOW, who exactly are these ‘moderates’?

2. His estimation (quantity & quality) of those ‘moderates’ remaining after Assad is removed.

Egypt was very lucky to have a el-Sisi rise up when he did (more an execption). Even so it was after much killing there. And, the situation in Egypt is still very fragile.

It appears the way Obama has been dealing with the M.E. & North Africa since 2011 is not so much about having a ‘representative govt’, but more about destabilizing, throwing a whole lot up in the air, then watching from mostly afar how things land & eventually shape up.

Obama doesn’t want upset Putin, who is adamant about retaining access to Syria’s warm water ports.

Obama opposes U.S. interests.

Sure - the Left believes "people are good." Just get rid of the imperialists and racists and everything will automatically work out for the best, right? Right...? :)
