2 Secret Service agents crashed into White House barricades after attending party, report says

Two senior Secret Service agents -- one of whom is a top member of President Obama's protective detail -- reportedly drove a government car into White House security barricades after drinking at a late-night party last week.

The Washington Post, citing a current and a former government official familiar with the incident, reported Wednesday afternoon that the officers on duty who witnessed the March 4 incident wanted to arrest the agents and conduct sobriety tests. But the officers were ordered by a supervisor on duty that night to let the agents go home, said the sources, who spoke to the paper on the condition of anonymity.

Witnesses reported that the car’s overhead flashing lights had been activated and both agents were showing their badges to get through a section of the grounds that had been closed off due to an investigation of a suspicious package, according to the people familiar with the incident, the Post reported. The vehicle ran through security tape before hitting the barricades, which an agency official said had been set up temporarily during the investigation into the package.

So I'm not really clear here about the chain of events. A couple agents go out drinking, then decide to just drop in at the White House, drive into an active investigation, crash into some barriers, then the supervising agent says ‘just let them go home...’

I tried to puzzle out why they were there. First I figured that they weren't staying at the White House, there's just not enough places for people to stay there, even for the President's detail.

But it was a suspicious package investigation, with the current climate, I can easily see someone pulling the ‘all hands on deck’ type deal, and recalled the agent from his night off as he is part of the presidential protection detail. He arrives, someone notices how many people are on scene and figures that they don't need someone who had been drinking, sends him home, just isn't clear on the way out.

Thing is, this story totally reads like a ‘get me higher on the dogpile’ type leak - rich on embarrassing detail, especially the flashing lights touch, and light on actual information - like a recalled agent called in from off duty hours.

The authorities said the Chilean officers had seemed poised to act.

At least one Secret Service agent was shoved against a wall, the authorities said, as Mr. Trotta continued to push his way into the center. It was then that Mr. Bush responded, pushing into the crowd of angry security officials, pointing at Mr. Trotta and ordering that he be released. Mr. Bush finally reached over and grabbed the agent by the suit collar.

“He’s with me,” Mr. Bush said as he waded into the scuffle and pulled the agent through the crowd.

The authorities said the Chilean agents were shocked when they determined that the man pushing over them was Mr. Bush, who, they said, grabbed Mr. Trotta, adjusted his shirt cuffs and then winked at bystanders with the agent at his side.

La Cuarta, a Santiago newspaper, described Mr. Bush’s actions as a “total breach of protocol” and referred to him as “John Wayne … definitely acting like a cowboy.”
