Social Security IG says 6.5 million people claim to be 112 or older

The inspector general for the Social Security Administration has found that 6.5 million active Social Security cards belong to people claiming to be 112 years old or older.

Worldwide, the number of people currently living to be 112 stands at 35.

Clearly, most of those people are dead, and relatives never bothered to tell Social Security about it. But a significant number of those claiming to be 112 years old are thought to be stealing the identity of dead people.

From Washington Post:

"The Social Security Administration’s inspector general said in a report on Monday that the questionable identification numbers put the government at risk of fraud and waste.

The review found that one individual opened bank accounts using Social Security numbers for individuals born in 1869 and 1893.

The official database of active Social Security numbers showed that both beneficiaries were alive, meaning they would be older than 145 and 121 years, respectively.

Auditors also discovered that nearly 67,000 Social Security numbers in recent years were used to report wages for people other than the cardholders. The workers reported about $3 billion in earnings between 2006 and 2011."

According to the article, here’s the jaw-dropping response from SSA administrators to the idea that they clean up their records to include people who have died -— WE DON’T HAVE THE TIME OR RESOURCES TO DO IT.

I talked to a libinlaw about a related issue of fraud in the welfare system.

I said that libs don’t care if there’s fraud, waste and abuse, because first and foremost, it’s not their money being wasted, and secondly, they believe that it’s far more important to make sure everyone is covered that needs it.

Libinlaw - “we do TOO care about the fraud and abuse!”
[2 second pause, I swear]
“but it’s far more important that everyone that needs help gets it”.

Does anyone believe the number is anywhere close to that low? With 12-30 million illegals and those not working off the books needed a SS number there have to be a lot more than 67,000 illegally used SS numbers.

The U.S. Government is so corrupt and criminal that it makes the mafia and the drug cartels look like a bunch of choirboys.

Yeah...and most of the blind ones are from the Greek island of Xakinthois...

The Greek health ministry is investigating on Zakynthos after local officials flagged records showing what they said is an implausibly high number of disability claims for blindness.

About 1.8% of the island's population of 39,000 claimed the benefit last year, according to the health ministry. That is around nine times the prevalence of blindness estimated for many European countries in a 2004 study published in a World Health Organization journal.

Maybe the Federal Social Service department could hire some of the Greek investigators to find the 6.5 million 112 year old folk.

If the Greeks can root out fake blind people then finding 6.5 millioin dead people is a no brainer.

Socialist Security is legal plunder built on the backs of dead Americans.

Taxes and death…the calling cards of socialists/totalitarians.

The SSA might want to personally check on all these oldsters and make sure the mummified bodies are not hidden away and find the kids or grandkids getting and spending the checks.

I posted thisyesterday on another thread on this subject.

While on the surface this appears to be shocking, reading the underlying information Ie. the audit summary document reveals an infinitesimal number of potential abuses as compared to the number of SS numbers.

We use a nine digit number to track 300,000,000 million living and roughly another 150,000,000 million people who have died just in the last 50 years. 6.5 million records are 1.4% of the total number of records that do not have a date of death. While not perfect, it does not mean those 6.5 million records are being used nefariously as the article implies.

Yes, the audit found that some people have ATTEMPTED to use numbers of people who would be 112+ to apply for jobs, etc. But it does not say they were successful.

The audit report cites some old information in reporting the oldest man. “In September 2013, a New York resident, believed to be the world’s oldest living man, died at age 112. According to the Gerontology Research Group, as of October 2013, only 35 known living individuals worldwide had reached age 112.”

The Gerontology Research Group seems to be in some flux since the death of the director of the project last year, but they are showing 56 living verified supercentenarians (just six months ago they were showing 78). Only two of them are men, both Japanese, they are 111 and 112. The GRG describes their list as only those verified and estimates that there are 350 to 400 living people over 110 years old.

So yes, 6.5 million is totally unlikely, but it is more of a need to get the records updated, not that 6.5 million people are using bogus SS numbers.
