A 32-year-old black man was sitting in his car, cooling off after playing basketball in a public park in the city of Ferguson, Mo. Then a police officer pulled up.
The officer approached him and demanded his identification. He then accused the man of being a pedophile, since there were children in the park, and ordered him out of his car. When the man objected, the officer arrested him and charged him with eight violations of Fergusons municipal code, including a charge for not wearing a seatbelt, even though he was in a parked car.

As if the police don’t have revenue-raising quotas in white neighborhoods? They sure as heck DO.
Bull Cheese.
If you think I’m going to click the link to ready a phony-baloney, tear jerking, all whites are racist, Black Live Matter, load of CRAP by the New York Slimes - you got another think coming.
Not blasting you Olivia - just the idiot intro.
I was listening to Holder’s tales of racially motivated horror and thinking the same has happened to me at times.
The DOJ gave us the cop but took the Police Department. Soon a majority of the officers will be black.
Silver lining on this cloud: Ferguson was just another typical police force. This sort of thing may stop because of this report, lapel cameras and citizen cell phones.
This matters because it’s not just black males this happens to.

There will always be cases like this, no matter where you go. We all know there are cops who will find something, anything to arrest an individual without knowing the circumstances. I’m not defending either side here, the LEO had a concern but might have handled that totally different.
I did not write piece or the headline.
OR, “A Town Filled With Riotous Thugs”
Wish I could write NYT headlines.
did Eric ‘ Dick ‘ Holder mention that the man was cooling off with his black snake out ?
Ditto.
I got profiled driving near Bill Gates house because I was driving my 16 year old daughter’s “beater”. I was in the middle of a line of 12 or so cars and a cop weaved by the ones in back to pull me over for —— having my year and month tabs in each other’s position on my license plate.
Once he saw who I was it got kind of comical, though. The person doesn’t always fit the car. Duh.
A few months later my wife and I passed another car there pulled over by police. It was a mid 70’s full sized mercury with six Mexicans in it. We couldn’t stop laughing.
I find everything in this article very easy to believe.
The shoot was still legit.
You made the correct choice.
“In another instance from 2013, a group of black youths were listening to music in a car. Suspecting that they had been using marijuana, an officer arrested them, and some went to jail, for gathering in a group for the purposes of committing illegal activity. No evidence of marijuana was found, even after a search of the car.”
Do you advocate the Thought Police Division of the Police State?
The police here where I live have always been polite to me and only cited me for things I really did.
Why don’t the residents pay taxes so the government isn’t forced into these unseemly methods?
Maybe they should run for office and vote.
“Headhunter” officers exist on every police department. They rarely discriminate. If they can make court overtime on your real, fractional, or theoretical infractions, they often will....especially in the last hour of their shift: they can get an hour or two of overtime typing the narrative for the complaint. Nothing new; as old as policing itself.
Nothing whatever to do with sex or race. It’s about opportunity and vulnerability.
It’s not unique to Ferguson. St. Louis County is full of suburbs who generate a significant percentage of city revenue from police citations.
Why don't you take your knuckle-dragging understanding of American government and go to Somalia - and stay there.
More likely the police department will be disbanded. No way Ferguson can afford to make the changes the DOJ is calling for.
