A Maryland couple who were investigated by state officials after letting their children walk home from a park without an adult say they will appeal a finding of "unsubstantiated child neglect" and will continue to let the children walk by themselves.

The kids are ten and six. They are together. My son walks home from school and has for the last year. He is in second grade and eight years old.
Why does everyone think children should live in a bubble until they’re 50?
Yes, the state neglected to find evidence to substantiate their child neglect charges; but they “just knew” the parents were guilty of “something” that would harm their children.

I walked home from 1st grade about 2 miles every day. Never knew my parents were negligent.
The statist’s are attacking a fundamental value; i.e. the family. If the attack becomes widespread it is possible a lot of Social Worker’s will decorate trees.
This was a local story here — I seem to recall the walk from the park to their home was between 1/2 and 1 mile and it was in the daytime.
As a kid, I roamed far and wide, mile after mile, in search of adventure, exploring forests, cornfields, and alleyways. Never once did the police hunt me down for having too much fun. Thank God I grew up in a rural Wisconsin town!

I heard an interview with the mother this morning. The idea of her kids getting kidnapped didn’t occur to her until the state started talking about removing her children from her home. Kidnapped by the state.

I suspect as a youngster that you came to respect the power of a firearm, for its ability to protect you, save your loved ones, and to vanquish the evil in the world. Nowadays, kids are taught to fear the boomstick. What a shame.
How about countersuing the system that allows a society to deteriorate to the point that children cannot walk home from the park alone?
