McConnell ready to move ‘clean’ bill to avert Homeland Security shutdown

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday said the Senate may vote “very quickly” on a clean Department of Homeland Security funding bill.

Days before a shutdown of the critical agency, McConnell said he would “be happy" to pass a clean DHS funding bill before the Senate considers a narrow measure overturning President Obama’s most recent executive actions on immigration.

His plan, if accepted by Senate Democrats and House Republicans, would prevent Homeland Security from shutting down on Saturday.

McConnell noted the Senate is scheduled to vote Friday on legislation he introduced this week to reverse President Obama's 2014 executive order shielding up to 5 million illegal immigrants from deportation.

If that vote goes forward, it could be followed by a vote on legislation funding the Homeland Security agency.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) said Tuesday he would not greenlight McConnell's plan until he hears from Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) that it can pass the House.

Reid insisted Democrats would make every attempt to block a vote on Obama's 2014 executive order until they get a vote on a clean DHS funding bill.

McConnell had previously agreed to drop language that also sought to overturn Obama’s 2012 executive actions on immigration. That language was included in a bill that approved the House.

Some congressional insiders predicted both chambers would have to pass a short-term stopgap but McConnell's plan, if successful, would avoid that scenario.

Does this mean they’d vote to defund Obama’s illegals thing BEFORE DHS is funded?

Aside from being a gutless, worthless yahoo, doesn't McConnell realize he's in charge?

Just tell Reid to go sit in the corner and have the vote!

McConnell’s phone line needs to be expelled from the party immediately. He’s just sold out the entire Republican Party and given the democrats total victory.

They are on the exact same side as Democrats.

Americans have no representation.

Wouldn’t the the senate bill have to go to reconciliation with the House? Pass the reconciliation bill with the immigration restrictions with just 50 votes in the senate

Democrats run the show regardless of which party has the majority apparently. Even if Repubs pass a bill that disrupts Obama’s amnesty, Obama will just veto it. I’m sure that they would never get enough Demos to overturn any veto that Obama issued. Just a dog and pony show for the voter’s entertainment.
