Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, said Sunday that the U.S. handling of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine represents a "shameful" chapter of American history.
"I'm ashamed of my country, I'm ashamed of my president and I'm ashamed of myself that I haven't done more to help these people," McCain said in an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation."
He also had harsh words for German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, whom McCain said "legitimized for the first time in 70 years the dismemberment of a country in Europe."
Merkel and Hollande helped broker a recent cease-fire between Ukraine and Russian-backed rebels in the eastern part of the country. The tenuous agreement has been violated several times already and is at risk of collapsing entirely.
McCain is one of the U.S. lawmakers who is pushing President Obama to provide the Ukrainian military with lethal weapons so it can extract a higher cost on Russia for territorial incursions.
"The Ukrainians aren't asking for American boots on the ground; that's not the question here. They're asking for weapons to defend themselves and they are being slaughtered and their military is being shattered," McCain said. "Some of the best Russian special forces are there and they will continue this aggression for as long as they can get away with it...[Russian President] Vladimir Putin wants Ukraine not to be part of Europe and he is succeeding in doing so."
At a news conference with Merkel earlier this month, Mr. Obama said he has not yet made a decision on whether to send lethal weapons to the Ukrainian military but followed Merkel in continuing to call for a diplomatic resolution.
He needs to suit up and make himself proud.
I think he's got it
I think he's got it
Putin started the war. Putin is the only one invading and murdering people.
McCain is still pathetic. We are ashamed of him too.
I cant sit through CBS Face the Nation.
Its like a Nursing Home show. They all should have retired years ago.
We are ashamed of you, McCain.
Not one bad word about Obama or his friends on the other side of the aisle. He jumps right in on America. FUJM
Maybe McCain should be ashamed of not helping the Ukraine “build the danged fence?”
The man is an absolute clown and embarrassment.
The greatest threat to the USA are muslims. He and Obama were on the wrong side in Libya. The sleazebag should feel shame for that too.
And, while you’re at it John, you should feel shame for the Keating 5, your cheating on your first wife you left in a wheelchair, getting into and staying in the Naval Academy when others were far more deserving, ...... the list is long, John.
Ukrainian protesters get visit from Sen. John McCain
John McCain tells Ukraine protesters: 'We are here to support your just cause'
The Ukrainians should blame him.
What a joke.
How many tanks did he have? When did they cross into Russia?
How many missiles did he hurl into Russia?
People are allowed to visit a sovereign country without Putins’ permission!! Outrageous.
While I agree that America should be doing more, I am never “ashamed” of my country, the greatest country ever to exist on the planet.
John...you belong skipping hand in hand with Mooseshelle down a dark ally.
But McCain confesses he is ashamed of himself and there is ample reason for him to be so. It is McCain who failed to indict Obama for what he was in the election of 2008, worse, it was McCain who affirmatively prohibited others from informing the American electorate of the true nature of the president of whom McCain now professes himself to be ashamed.
McCain not only throttled all investigation of the dubious biography of Barack Obama he publicly rebuked and humiliated his supporter for merely using Obama's given and legal middle name, "Hussein." We have Obama as president because John McCain failed as a candidate and we have failure in Ukraine and everywhere around the world because Obama is president.
John McCain is ashamed and he is much to be ashamed about.
There is a lot of misunderstandings over how this all started.
Let us remember....for years and years, the Ukraine talked up better trade with the EU....where nothing much would come from talks. So, toward the end of 2013 (after the Russian Olympics and EU elections)...oddly, the EU team arrived and wanted a short compact four-star trade treaty finished up. It is odd how it suddenly got prioritized, and we might ask who in the EU led this and what agenda was attached.
Somewhere in this treaty for trade, was a annex for military related affairs. You look over the decade....several neighbors of Russia get easily accepted into NATO. We can question the reasons for the previous folks....but this was one of those times when it made no sense.
A brilliant EU team would have spoken up for some agricultural treaty and opened the door for mass farming trade. Two years later....massive boat/bus/car/truck trade. Step by step. Russians would have done nothing over that.
After the mess starts....the US suddenly has interest in Ukraine....something they didn’t have before. You have to wonder why.
Russia is now in a state of misery over trade relations with the EU, and their lousy exchange rate with the Ruble. Putin may have screwed up....but the EU did just as much, and the US solution of throwing more weapons into the mix begs more questions.
In the beginning of 2013....Ukraine had tons of potential for trading. Large IT sector growing....boat sector working out great....tourism finally taking off with people actually visiting the country. Today? Screwed up to the maximum.
And vocalize support for an unlawful act? Sen. McCain was the catalyst to the narrow-minded rebellion that had no chance to succeed. Look at the action Putin has taken. Has he invaded the Ukraine? No. He has secured Crimea, which was always considered part of Russia due to Sevastopol, the only warm-water port. Had Putin wanted Ukraine, nothing could have stopped him.
McCain is a genuine whackjob.
Sounds racist, to me.
Is he proposing GIVING or SELLING weapons to the Ukraine? I don’t have as much of a problem with SELLING weapons, especially if we make a slight profit.
I do however, dislike the idea of Weapons Welfare for Ukraine.
