The mayor of Venezuela's capital, Antonio Ledezma, has been arrested amid accusations of a coup attempt.

President Nicolas Maduro said the opposition leader must answer "for all the crimes committed against the country's peace and security."

Camouflaged police smashed into the mayor's office and carried him away......

Hundreds of people gathered at the intelligence agency's HQ in Caracas to protest at the arrest.....

Mr. Ledezma was on a list of people and foreign powers named by Mr. Maduro last week as attempting to bring down his administration.

Mr. Ledezma, Caracas mayor since 2008, replied that it was government corruption that was bringing down Venezuela.

He was taken on Thursday from his office in the banking district.

Opposition legislator Ismael Garcia wrote on Twitter: "I just saw how they took Ledezma out of his office as if he were a dog. They broke down the doors without an arrest warrant."

A member of Mr. Ledezma's security detail said about 10 men with guns and a hatchet came for the mayor, bundling him out of the building.

Last year, weeks of anti-government protests led to more than 40 deaths.

Venezuela's economy has been heavily affected by the drop in oil prices.....

I’d imagine just as in Cuba in decades past, Venezuelans will be scouring their family trees for their Spanish ancestors - and escaping. Just as in Cuba, they’ll be leaving the place to less competent, envious people who will finish the job of transforming it into Zimbabwe.

Mayor arrested.......”carried him away as if he were a dog”........

I’d sure like to see that happen at the White House.

The Kenyan Pirate would be the one ordering the arrest; Dem politicians are rarely treated like this. In neighboring Newark NJ, we had Kleptocrat mayor Sharpe James looting for years; the Feds knew it, and waited until he was an old man voted out of office before acting on it...

Similar to prior generations of Cubans, a taste of Hugo gave able Venezuelans just cause to migrate to south Florida and other areas of our Gulf coast. It has occurred to me that Germans perhaps set the migration example after 1938.
“Manuro”, perhaps a Colombian impostor, certainly the Ralph Kramden of Venezuela, is just ongoing salt on the wound.

The media reports are that falling oil prices are the problem. Nothing to see here... All is well in paradise.

“led to 40 deaths”

Who killed who? Shall we guess?

I’m sure our state department will be all over this, issuing statements about democracy and the right to political opposition - just like the ‘Arab Spring’. Or, maybe not.

Well, the falling oil prices are now part of the current accounts. The money stream has become a dripping faucet.

The important thing is that the little people suffer equally and the friends of the government indulge in complete gluttony.

Henrique Capriles might also be on the list.

Pablo Perez, governor of Zulia, is probably on the list too.
