There was a time, perhaps sometime in the 19th Century, when people could simply WALK from Canada to the US - the lake was 100% frozen over, and was nearly June before some of the ports were accessible.

I don't know when that might have been, but whenever, it would have been a very long walk. Can't think of why one would want to try it.
