Amnesty isn’t the only immigration matter Scott Walker needs to think hard about
Powerline ^ | February 15, 2015 | Paul Mirengoff

Two very astute readers have responded to my post about Scott Walker’s position on amnesty by arguing that Walker’s bigger problem is his apparent preference for seemingly unlimited legal immigration. Walker has said, for example:

"I don’t care whether it is from Mexico or India or Germany or Ireland or anywhere else around the world, if we have people who want to come here and work hard and live the American dream, we should embrace those people."

Taken literally, Walker’s statement obviously goes too far. As Neil Munro has pointed out, a Gallup poll indicates that at least 138 million low-skilled or high-skilled people in China, Latin America, India and Africa want to immigrate to the United States.

The U.S. clearly cannot welcome this many immigrants. I’m hoping that, as Walker hones his position on immigration, he will make it clear that there should be limits on legal immigration.

I also hope that Walker will make clear that the U.S. shouldn’t welcome everyone who has a university degree or even an advanced degree. As one reader warns, this approach would quickly commoditize U.S. graduates and professionals thus seriously threatening America’s upper-middle class.

Both readers note that Scott Walker isn’t the only Republican contender who has been too quick to embrace the significant expansion of visas for foreign professionals. In fact, all of the most prominent contenders — Walker, Bush, Rubio, Cruz, and Paul — appear to have.

Rubio, for example, has co-sponsored legislation that would expand the number of guest-workers for the tech industry. Its premise is that the U.S. suffers from a shortage of high-tech workers, a dubious proposition. Indeed, companies like Microsoft have been laying off such employees.

The debates among Republican presidential contenders will feature a sharp clash of views on what to do about illegal immigrants. Let’s hope there’s also a serious clash on the issue of legal immigration.

Good thing you got the right links this time. You never should have used the link before in the first place. Next time be more responsible with your posts because you are either trying to be deceptive or a liar.

Alex Walker is 20 years old and is NOT running for President that I am aware of. I guess you hated our Vice President Cheney who even has a gay daughter. Did you vote for Cheney? You must be for gay rights then.

“The bloom is off this flower.”

That’s for sure. We’ve had mass legal immigration in southern California in addition to the tsunami of illegals and both are the reason this state changed from Reagan country to an Obama stronghold.

If he thinks mass legal immigration is a great idea then he shouldn’t be President.

RE :”Are you trying to be idiotic on purpose? Gov. Walker nearly graduated college, why is it Sen. Cruz’s fault that he didn’t? Now we’re supposed to denigrate a man who graduated with high honors from two of the most well-respected, toughest colleges in the world merely because your boy doesn’t have a sheepskin? “

I understand, this explains your and Ted's preference for foreigners with college educations to come here.

Seeing College education as more important than accomplishments.

Hard to believe that Reagan got elected and we survived without him going to college.

If we have a shortage of tech workers or other workers for that matter, why aren’t we training our own citizens to fill such jobs?

Believe me, if there was a shortage of STEM workers then salaries would be through the roof. They are not. Employers do not want to pay market wages. They are trying to undercut Americans and low ball them.

C’mon. Shortage has nothing to do with it. Tech companies are just replacing American IT workers with cheaper H1Bs.

And they pay good money to politicians of both parties so that they can do it.

You mean this guy?

f his H1-B stance is the worst thing we can find on Ted Cruz, we should all get behind him this minute!

H-1b is a deal breaker for me. You clearly do not understand that issue.

Were you under the impression that I was unaware of your feelings towards H1-B visas after all our discussions of same?

Your comment was inflammatory to those that have a lot at stake in the H-1b visa issue. Just making sure you get my position.

RE :”President Ronald Reagan had a bachelors degree from Eureka College, Einstein. “

But not a law degree like Ted does, we need more lawyers in Washington, there is a shortage of them.

So if I believe that American colleges are not turning out enough and the right kind of graduates for US industry, I’m goring your ox? I’ve been a career counselor and recruiter most of my adult life. I like to think that I know my career field.

It is all supply and demand. Shortage of STEM workers SHOULD cause an increase in starting salaries, which in turn causes many more students to take on a rigorous STEM career in college. Well the H-1b short circuits the free market inside the USA, it is a really bad thing. You don't get it, because you are either stupid or just messing with a lot of people. Which is it?

There damn sure is a shortage of lawyers like Ted Cruz, who, on your behalf, won District of Columbia v. Heller, Van Orden v. Perry, Elk Grove Unified School District v. Newdow, League of United Latin American Citizens v. Perry and Medellin v. Texas, as well as keeping Al Gore out of the White House.

Scott Walker can say whatever he likes about immigration that will help him get elected president. I will trust him to do the right thing once in office. Other Republicans I don’t trust. I would never trust Jebster on immigration. Ted Cruz I would. Rick Perry.... a good man but not to be trusted on immigration.

Huckster and Romney are lost causes and get below zero trust on immigration both legal and illegal.

Oh, horse$#*+!! If American students would apply themselves and study, they’d get those degrees. But instead, they go into phys. ed., Africana & Women’s studies, education, literature and a boatload of other easy fields. Watch out! Your straw man is burning!
