Boris Johnson says he intends to renounce his American citizenship to prove his "commitment to Britain".
He told the Sunday Times that his citizenship was "an accident of birth that has left me with this thing. I've got to find a way of sorting it out".
The Mayor of London, who was born in New York, has in the past been forced to pay US tax because of his American citizenship.
He has just completed a six-day tour of cities in the US.
Mr Johnson said he would approach US ambassador Matthew Barzun to explore what steps he had to take to give up his American nationality.
The Conservative politician - who was born in Manhattan in 1964 and owns a US passport alongside a British one - said that relinquishing his citizenship was a "laborious business, they don't make it easy for you".

Good idea.
Eritrea don’t get no respect, no respect at all.
...Donald Trump without the hair spray?
And that is totally cool with me
Who is he and why should I care? The only Boris I know is Boris Badanov...........
I do. I don't want to be taxed unfairly by my government and I don't think anyone else should be either even if he is the Mayor of London England and is a dyed-in-the-wool Socialist wanker...
Conservative leader? Really...must be a CINO...
>> Hes the Conservative mayor of London <<
He may be a member of the Conservative Party, but Boris Johnson has no conservative values. He appears to be the UK's answer to Michael Bloomberg.
There are a surprising amount of people on this thread that don’t appear to know who Boris Johnson is. If you take an interest in conservative politics worldwide, it is absolutely impossible not to have encountered him.
He is the Mayor of one of the greatest cities on Earth.
He presided over the immensely successful Olympic Games in London in 2012.
Those interested in the classical world may have enjoyed his various books, including ‘The Dream of Rome.’
Churchillians amongst us (surely more than a few on this site) will know him as the author (authorised by the Churchill Estate) of the recent best-seller, ‘The Churchill Factor.’
He is being tipped to be a major candidate to be the next leader of the Conservative Party, and possibly, quite possibly, a future Prime Minister of the UK.
He is seen as a clown by many, but he is certainly, most certainly, not a nobody.
Good riddance.
< |:)~
Now, *I* am definitely a nobody!
i think you just saved him a bundle un tax money...
Well American citizenship is so cheap; just walk in; claim it and get nicely paid for doing so; is there any other country anywhere in world that would do such a thing.
American citizenship is not even on sale; it is free for the TAKING, a pile of outhouse crap will cost you more.
Think of all the blood and treasure over 200 years that is just being pissed on; don’t know about anyone else but I’m raging mad; not long ago (certainly in my lifetime) American Citizenship was the greatest treasure one could possess on the entire earth.
Many of us know and read Boris.
Anyone is allowed to make application for citizenship changes within the laws. This guy is going for higher office. Why not clear it up?
This “Conservative” is a left-winger. He may not be as blood-red as his execrable predecessor, Red Ken, but he is a pretty rare shade of red.
He is too far to the left, even for the Cameronized wet Tories. And a giant rat bleached itself and died on his head.
