David Carr, a writer who wriggled away from the demon of drug addiction to become an unlikely name-brand media columnist at The New York Times, and the star of a documentary about the newspaper, died on Thursday in Manhattan. He was 58.

Mr. Carr collapsed in the Times newsroom, where he was found shortly before 9 p.m. He was taken to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Earlier in the evening, he moderated a panel discussion about the film “Citizenfour” with its principal subject, Edward J. Snowden; the film’s director, Laura Poitras; and Glenn Greenwald, a journalist.

Wow-—sounds morose but I’m always curious as to what causes drop dead exits. Guessing massive heart attack, stroke, ruptured aneurysm or some other lesser medical culprit?

He looked horrible always. He did a live interview shortly before his demise last night and looked especially dreadful.

My mother said if you can’t say something nice about a dead person, just shut up...so I will.

His neck was incredibly thin. I’m not surprised he died the same day.

May have gotten the hemlock-laced latte made for Snowden, like last night’s episode of “Elementary”.

From TV Newser yesterday-—

The New York Times reports tonight that media columnist David Carr, who died suddenly Thursday night, had been suffering from lung cancer. According to results of an autopsy released Saturday evening, Carr died of complications of metastatic small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung. Heart disease was a contributing factor.

Carr, 58, had previously survived Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Carr’s death came at the end of an emotional and turbulent week in media, and despite telling colleagues he was not feeling well, he made appearances at public events and on television.
