Madison police last week roughed up a 57-year-old Indian citizen who was walking on the sidewalk outside his son's home, leaving the older man temporarily paralyzed and hospitalized with fused vertebrae.
"He was just walking on the sidewalk as he does all the time," said his son, Chirag Patel, this morning. "They put him to the ground."
No crime had been committed. Madison Police on Monday issued a statement saying the department had suspended the officer and were investigating the use of force in this case. The police statement wished the man a "speedy recovery."
Chirag Patel, an engineer for one of the many government contractors in Huntsville, said he had just bought a one-way ticket for his father, bringing him from the small Indian town of Pij to his new home in fast-growing suburbs of Madison.
He said his father, Sureshbhai Patel, was to help his wife care for their new baby, a 17-month-old son, so he could pursue his masters degree in electrical engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
"This is a good neighborhood. I didn't expect anything to happen," said Chirag Patel, who recently bought the new house on Hardiman Place Lane.

‘Capt. John Stringer, spokesman for Madison Police, said there are both audio and video recordings of the stop. But he said those recordings were evidence in the internal affairs investigation, and would not be released to the public at this time.’
Did the officers get home safely?
Welcome to the party, pal.
The bigger question are:
Was the officer’s ego bruised?
Was the officer’s position of power threatened in any way by an improperly subservient civilian?
Paralysis is a small price to pay for an intact ego.
He was guilty of Walking While Indian.
Poor guy. The police are obviously under the impression that if you scream loud enough at a person, they will understand what you are saying.
Whats the purpose of recording audio and visual by the police if they’re not ever going to release it to the public?
Isn't that how it goes?
I bet they would release them pretty quickly if the recordings proved the officer acted in good faith.
We should offer adventure tourism to people around.the.world. xome to good old USA and get your azz beat.by.the.cops!
Probably — As a public service I have made the following brochure on how to safely interact with the authorities:
Stop, Drop, and Cower
Unable to locate Patel’s dog, the police shot the next 10 neighborhood dogs they saw. According to the police report, all the dogs threatened them, were belligerent and had an attitude.
Looks like taxes are going to be going up in Madison.
We have a tough, dangerous job.
Our brother cop did not get up that morning with the goal of becoming involved in an officer-involved shooting.
The dog needn’t be large to have a lethal bite —good shoot.
If you’re REALLY not up to no good you won’t mind me taking a look, right?
What, are you a hippy..?
Still mad about that ticket, 10 years ago..?
We’re just doing our jobs.
Police SOP’s are well-established —the police violated the rights of no one.
The key thing is for us to go home safely at the end of the shift.
Next time you have an emergency, just call the ACLU.
We have to make split second decisions youre being unfair.
Dont paint us all with the same broad brush.
I don’t think you understand just how highly we are trained.
Were the thin blue line, what, ya want anarchy..?
The investigation showed the police followed department procedure.
You must just be a cop hater.
They are saying that they must conduct and internal affairs investigation first. I don’t know why that means they can’t or won’t release the video which I assume shows the officers screaming at the victim and then throwing him to the ground when he fails to grovel adequately.
Do we need to throw in free black face makeup?
WTF?!
Waiting for the Jackboot Lickers to check in and defend the Officers.....
..... Waiting ......
That about sums it up!
