Rev. Jesse Jackson said Wednesday he is planning to celebrate Jackie Robinson West at a Reaffirmation of Championship celebration on Saturday.
The event will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Rainbow PUSH Coalition, 930 E. 50th St.
I was upset to the point of tears this morning, Jackson said, adding that he already had spoken to some of the parents of the players and was distressed to learn they had heard the news through the media.
Their children already have been harassed over the controversy, Jackson said, and its not like the children are cheating.
Violating a boundary line when parents have dealt with housing difficulties and are trying to find decent schools for their children cant really be compared to other cheating, such as lying about their ages.
Theres nothing these kids have done to have their championship erased, Jackson said. I hope the Las Vegas team will have the strength of character not to accept.
While the actions of the Las Vegas team may be in doubt, the feelings of Mayor Rahm Emanuel were not.
Of all of the state and local politicians basking in the glow of JRWs Cinderella run, nobody did more of it than the mayor.
And on Wednesday, he echoed Jacksons sentiments, and reaffirmed that the children who did nothing wrong are still winners in his eyes.
Emanuel had held watch parties for JRWs games at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., organized a rally for the exhausted team when they returned home and arranged for the massive parade from the South Side to a rally at Millennium Park to celebrate the U.S. title.
The mayor also mentioned Chicagos boys of summer in virtually every speech he gave in an attempt to rebuild his standing with African-American voters who helped put him in office voters who had soured on the mayor after he closed 50 public schools a record number. He also featured them at a City Council meeting.
After JRWs title was stripped Wednesday, Emanuel issued a carefully-worded statement that tried hard not to diminish, either the boys athletic achievement or the political benefit that the mayor got from it.
These remarkable boys brought our entire city together and reminded all Chicagoans how important it is to support our children. They created memories that will last a lifetime and nothing will take that away. They showed the nation their character both on and off the field, he said.
The city remains united in its support of these great children and in our hearts, they will always be champions in Chicago.
Far South Side Ald. Anthony Beale (9th), who coaches Little League and high school baseball, said the decision to strip JRW of the U.S. title that was the feel-good story of the year in Chicago is very unfortunate, but probably unavoidable.
The kids did nothing wrong. They went out there and played fabulously. They had no idea what the adults did. There should have been some type of penalty for the adults. The adults are the ones who needed to be penalized not the kids. Unfortunately, theres no way to do that without taking away the title. That hurts the kids. You never want to hurt the kids, Beale said.
That was an amazing group of kids. You cant take away the experience and everything theyve accomplished. They lived the dream. They met the President. They went to the [Major League] World Series and to Disney World. Its just unfortunate that, here we are once again. The acts of adults are hurting the kids. Hopefully, people will learn from this less and we never have to go down this road.
And what is the lesson from all this?
Theres no quick solution to success. Hard work pays off. You cant cut corners and expect to get away with it, Beale said.
The kids cheated.
I guess they get a pass because they are black? Is that Jackson’s point?
So Jesse is officially pro-cheating in youth sports.
They had no idea what the adults did. -—
Then they are REALLY REALLY dumb!
They met the President. They went to the [Major League] World Series and to Disney World. -—
Fulfilled their bucket list. Next best to getting 72 virgins.
I would bet that if they were to audit the address “history” of the team members, none of them was moving around in a “housing insecurity” situation during the time frames in question.
“Violating a boundary line when parents have dealt with housing difficulties and are trying to find decent schools for their children cant really be compared to other cheating, such as lying about their ages.”
I thought that the team drew up a fake boundary that allowed them recruit players from other counties. IF thisis so, then perhaps the kids didn’t know this had been done.
On the other hand Jackson’s comments are almost as bad as the press conference yesterday whereby the administration mouth pieces said the killing of 4 Jews in a Jewish Bakery was a random terrorist act, and not anti-semetic.
Hint: And if they do, there will be Hell to pay.
What a shameless idiot Jesse is...
"Violating a boundary line" is a euphemism for "stacking the team".
Jesse Hijack-son to the rescue.
Good grief after reading that I have a major headache. We are surely heading for the end of times.
See if I have this straight.
Jackson was ready to celebrate with them because they were legitimate champions. Now he wants Las Vegas to forfeit the legitimate title back to them, BECAUSE THEIR BLACK?!?
I’m surprised he didn’t accuse the JOOOOS of cooking this up to screw the poor black kids.
It’s hilarious that the team is from Chicago. Crap writes itself.
You MSM clowns still can’t get it right, can you? Neither Jesse nor Al have earned the title “Reverend”. Neither has ever completed divinity school, had a church, or had a congregation. Al was “ordained” at age 10 by a DC preacher and has perpetuated the lie ever since. Both men are race-baiting shams who wouldn’t warrant a sentence in history if you look at their positive contributions. Both consistently come down on the wrong side of the truth, from Tawana Brawley to the Duke Five, but still they continue to stir the racial pot because, if they didn’t, they’d fade away into the oblivion they deserve.
The kids didn’t know...
My favorite was in Junior League, back then, you couldn’t turn 16 during the season, strict age limit = 15 years old. One kid got ‘called’ on it, he and the coach moaned like crazy to the ump. He was allowed to play, pending review by the league office. The player didn’t help his case any, post game, when a few of our fans tailed him around the corner, and watched him drive off, in his Mom’s car :)
For Jessie and his ilk, the ends justify the means.
Lets go back to when YOU were 12. And in Little League. Did you know all the rules about districting and who should be on the team and who shouldn’t? I sure didn’t.
Blaming this on a bunch of 12 year old kids is ridiculous. Its the adults who cheated. The kids just went out and played baseball.
Their team was illegitimate because of the cheating, and didn’t earn the title, but that doesn’t put a bunch of 12 year old baseball players at fault. I feel bad for them.
If this team from a rural town and white, stripping the title would not be controversial
Having grown up in Chicago, I can say with confidence that Jackie Robinson West did it the Chicago way.
Really? So you knew districting rules for Little League when you were 12???? These were kids playing baseball and doing what their coach told them to do. Doesn’t make them dumb. Makes them kids. Sheeeeeesh.
Kids pay for the sins of their parents all the time.
It’s called real life.
Didn’t say it would be. I’m just reading posts saying its, the kids fault, the kids knew, etc etc. Baloney. Its a bunch of 12 year baseball players. This the ADULTS fault, not the kids fault. And I feel for the kids who thought they had won something, and now realize they hadn’t.
