The Senate's most senior lawmaker said Tuesday he will skip the Israeli prime minister's speech to Congress next month on Iran, calling the invitation by Republicans without White House consultation a "tawdry and high-handed stunt." Related Stories
Seven-term Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont joined a half dozen Democrats who have decided to boycott Benjamin Netanyahu's speech, which comes in middle of delicate negotiations involving the United States, Western powers and Iran over its nuclear program. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, invited Netanyahu to address a joint meeting of Congress on March 3.
"The unfortunate way that House leaders have unilaterally arranged this, and then heavily politicized it, has demolished the potential constructive value of this joint meeting," Leahy said in a statement. "They have orchestrated a tawdry and high-handed stunt that has embarrassed not only Israel but the Congress itself."
Democrats have complained that the speech is an affront to President Barack Obama, who has said he will not meet with Netanyahu when he visits the United States and who said Monday that he has "very real differences" with the Israeli leader over Iran and sanctions.
Vice President Joe Biden also will miss the speech, citing unspecified travel plans.
Boehner has defended the invitation.
Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the No. 2 House Democratic leader, said he would attend Netanyahu's speech,
Hoyer said he spoke to Netanyahu two weeks ago after he was invited to speak.
"I told him of the political consternation that this had caused within our caucus, and that it was unfortunate," he said.
Netanyahu is a sharp critic of administration negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, and Democrats fear he'll use the opportunity to embarrass Obama and further his own re-election prospects. The speech comes two weeks before elections in Israel.

Looks like battle lines are being drawn and sides are being taken. It’s good to get the mask off.
Seven terms...he, and anyone “serving” that long, should be ashamed of themselves.
Liehy is a steaming turd. American Jews take note: Democrats are not your friends. Do you get it yet?
Disgraceful truly disgracedful
Jew hating bigot.
Apparentyly he missed obola’s SOTU tawdry and high handed stunt ... or maybe not, but approved of THAT tawdry and high handed stunt
At long last...have you NO SHAME Vermont. How do you elect this chump 7 times? Disgraceful.
Well, he puts Obama’s politics with Iran(Iran being an enemy), ahead of the security of a trusted ally in the Middle East, Israel!
” Liehy is a steaming turd. American Jews take note: Democrats are not your friends. Do you get it yet?”
Old habits and masochism die hard....
I think Netanyahu has to stay the course and give the speech. This will be a stark reminder to anyone who is uncertain about which side is correct, and who has a proper concern and skepticism about Iran’s intentions. Yes, the mindless leftist Jews, like Bernie Sanders will not change. But more and more, many people whose beliefs who are normally on the left are becoming wary (eg Sen Menendez)... and people of all decent faiths; Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists and others are realizing what we face, and the dangers of the clueless Islamist sympathizer’s appeasement who supposedly leads our country.
This is why there should be term limits.
I’m sure that Boehner really cares what Leaky Leahy and the CBC think.
Urinate on all of them! I just hope Boehner doesn’t fold like a cheap umbrella and capitulate. I want to see and hear Bibi tell them and us all, precisely where the bear defacated in the buckwheat.
I saw several articles, I even posted one here, that said that Netanyahu accepted the offer after the WH was notified. Obama wants to stir up trouble by saying he went behind his back. Yet it is just ignored.
“The New York Times has continued its apparent bias against Israeli Prime Minister with a story Friday wrongly alleging that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accepted Speaker of the House John Boehners invitation to address Congress before President Barack Obamas was notified. In fact, Netanyahu only accepted after the White House knew about the speech. The story has since been corrected online, but the incorrect version will misinform print readers today.”
The GOP needs to make a big deal of this -— after the event is over. Let’s make it clear to America who stands with Israel.
The Democrats are making it clear to Jews everywhere that they stand with Islam.
This is hilarious. I am just begging the Republicans to video the speech *and* the audience, especially the empty chairs, and have a little CGI magic to show the name of the occupants of the empty chairs. This will make it crystal clear to American Jews and Israelis who *exactly* supports Jews and Israel, and who hates both.
Put that video on DVD, print a gazillion of them, and send them to Israel and US Jewish communities. Especially those in the districts of absent congressmen and senators.
No better nursing home than the US Senate!
