Twice authorities have intercepted drones being used to deliver contraband into prisons, leaving German states planning new ways of keeping criminal activity away from criminals. But is the law behind the curve on this new technology?
The justice ministry in Lower Saxony said that in future it might deploy so-called drone-trackersdevices equipped with infrared, night vision and sometimes even radarat prisons.
Were aware of this problem and are keeping an eye on it, said Lower Saxony justice minister Antje Niewisch-Lennartz.
Drones have only recently appeared on governments radars.
At the end of January, a drone carrying a package containing a mobile phone, a USB stick and two grams of cannabis crashed on the roof of a prison in Hamburg.
And there was a similar case in Bremen at the beginning of December, when prison wardens found a quadcopter freighted with ten grams of cannabis in their courtyard.

It’s only a question of time before terrorists fly a half dozen off-the-shelf drones into a football stadium and crash shrapnel laced plastic explosives into the crowd.
The bombs will be bad, but 10 times that number will be crushed to death when everyone rushes for the exits at the same time.
They can fly drones into prison yards and deliver packages to the inmates. Needless to say, the packages won’t contain cookies.
They attach the goods to arrows and shoot them over the prison wall at night. Happens in Colorado all the time. Arrows are cheaper than drones.
