There is absolutely nothing I can find which legitimately & beyond a doubt (conjecture) suggests King Abdullah II of Jordan is a "direct lineal [direct] descendant of Mohammad."
However, the Heshemites were/are a bedouin tribe with several clans to which Mohammad belonged, and King Abdullah II might be related (to one of the clans) on his father's side.
His biological mother (Princess Muna al-Hussein of Jordan) a British, ethnically and by citizenship, and a Christian, until she converted to Islam after she married King Hussein of Jordan (King Abdullah II's father).
For Shi'ites they put a direct emphasis on bloodlines, and often you see (Iranian) Mullahs who wear the Black Turban (as opposed to white turban) claim to be direct descendants of the Mohammad.
In Sunni-Islam, what counts is the "choice of authority" by the Ummah (Islamic community). In that sense, one can say the sunnis are, historically & religiously at least are more 'democratic'!
