Its getting harder and harder to find left-wing activists, even in public school unions in progressive Wisconsin. In 2011, in the wake of the largest workers uprising in recent U. S. history, I was elected president of the Milwaukee Teachers Education Association, Bob Peterson writes in the journal Rethinking Schools. Unfortunately, that spring uprising, although massive and inspirational, was not strong enough to stop Gov. Walker from enacting the most draconian anti-public sector labor law in the nation.
Reality check: Only 305 Wisconsin school districts unions sought recertification this November, dropping from 408 that did the year before, Diana-Ashley Krach writes in School Reform News. Additionally, state employees voted to decertify 25 school district unions.
Under Act 10, also known as the Wisconsin Budget Repair Bill, which went into effect in 2011, recertification requires a 51 percent yes vote from eligible union members.
Using those criteria, Walker would never have been elected, Peterson asserts. Actually, Governor Walker was reelected with 53 percent of the vote. Whats really astonishing is that the unions cannot even inspire the loyalty of one of the most left-leaning voting blocs in a left-leaning state.
Ironically, by Petersons own summary, the reforms were hardly draconian. He writes of Act 10 that It left intact only the right to bargain base-wage increases up to the cost of living. Most people think this is the prime purpose of a union.
Peterson goes on to complain that The new law prohibited agency shops, in which all employees of a bargaining unit pay union dues. It also prohibited payroll deduction of dues. The union members freedom of association does not bother him much.
Given the choice, most teachers say no to the union. That is the message.
...given the choice (finally)....many HAVE SAID and WILL SAY NO to the unions....
Given the choice, most teachers say no to the union. That is the message.
And in red states, the teachers paying Union dues want to say no to unions and democrats.
Most teachers are in the union for the liability insurance. You absolutely have to have it, but most teachers don’t know that there are other options.
Fixed it.
Union bosses hate secret ballots.
The Wisconsin teachers are a bunch of cheap, penny pinching bassturds so will not pay the salaries of these fatass union honchos. The union thugs have been deprived of their oxygen which is compulsory union dues.
This isn’t about a union fighting a capitalist company. The taxpayer is the company boss and everyone knows that now, including the union membership.
Public sector unions are like
A & B “negotiating” on how much they’re going to screw C.
Now C has stepped up and said NO.
The genius of ACT 10 is that even if the union is recertified, there is no automatic payroll deduction. They have to either get the member to sign up for an automatic payment from a bank account, or get him to cut a check.
It used to be, along with working conditions and protection from termination if injured, etc......
Those days are now long gone. They're racketeering and money laundering operations for the Left, now.
“It also prohibited payroll deduction of dues.”
I advocated this before Walker got it passed. Why should the taxpayers be paying to collect and disperse union dues?
Just out of curiosity, liability for what? Bad teaching?
That’s a small step in how normal payroll taxes should be paid.
No big overhaul of the IRS would be needed, and it could be enacted more quickly.
Just add it to the ObamaCare deduction.
Bad kids?
The previous director's total pay was $632,546 a year. I am not sure what the current guy is making since the union hides the current information from the public. But the last report from 2012 showed that he made $546,133. No doubt it is higher now in 2015.
I am stealing this for my tagline!
