EPA turning regulatory eyes to natural gas, expert says
Mississippi Watchdog ^ | February 4, 2015 | Steve Wilson

A former Environmental Protection Agency regulator warns that while the Obama administration now has coal in its crosshairs, natural gas is next in line.

David Schnare cites a proposed rule on methane emissions as one of the ways President Obama and the EPA will clamp down on natural gas. The 33-year EPA veteran, who once sued utilities for coal-fired plants that didn’t meet Clean Air Act standards, is director of the Center of Energy and Environmental Stewardship at the Thomas Jefferson Institute for Public Policy.

Schnare said the EPA — as part of its “Clean Power Plan” rule that would largely put coal-fired power plants out of business — is contemplating forcing natural gas plants to increase their capacity from 46 percent to 70 percent to reduce carbon emissions by working them harder to replace older generation units that emit more carbon dioxide. This would lead to equipment failures as turbines designed for the lower workload could not endure a heavier one. Their carbon dioxide emissions would also be more regulated “at the very limit” of present technology.

...

If the EPA decides to continue its crusade against fossil fuels, with natural gas next, its fight against coal provides the template. Obama fired the first salvo during the 2008 campaign in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle.

“So if somebody wants to build a coal power plant, they can,” Obama said. “It’s just that it will bankrupt them because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted”

I have said it before and I will say it again. The Environmental Lobby and the politicians it bribes presents the greatest threat there is today to the economy and national security of the United States.

Then we can go to work on our coal to gas project, spending even more energy, releasing even more CO2 gasifying our coal.

Like China:

The EPA heads up the 4th branch of gov’t (Regulatory). They are anti-capitalists who are so warped and chicken$h!t, they banned over the counter asthma inhalers and gave their staff time off to go to Occupy Wall Street protests.

They need to be destroyed before they completely ruin us.

I wonder how many EPA office buildings are heated with natural gas? Find the valves, send a message.

Perhaps we should ask the EPA how much greenhouse gas is emitted by a burning fighter pilot. The administration doesn’t seem concerned with that.

Abolish the EPA and send the responsibility back to the states.

Then the liberals states that want to bankrupt themselves will have to face the taxpayers/voters directly.

How about “NO”

Why does the EPA feel a need to fix something that is not broken.

Lefties should not use electricity nor gas nor live in a building that was built with wood or mining products - to save the planet.

Oh, but it IS “broken” in their view.

People are using affordable energy.

That’s a problem.

Leftists should be ISOLATED in their own political division where they can’t affect normal people.

EPA is trying to shut down the entire energy sector of this nation.

We HAVE Clean Air and Water!

The EPA is what needs to be SHUT DOWN!

This is just a question. Is there any limit to EPA’s power?

There is no Bill of Rights where the regulators are concerned. The three “coequal” branches all have constitutional limits on their power, though they conspire to evade those limits. But the three branches seem to use the regulators as a way around the law.

The regulators are kings. No one seems to have the will or ability to stop them.

I’ve had a few arguments with some who cite how much good the EPA has accomplished, but as I see it they are are trying to fix problems that don’t exist & don’t care who it destroys in the process. They all need to go back to school & learn something about CO2 which seems to be their main concern nowadays. It is so simple, but those at the EPA just can’t seem to grasp the truth.

What's your take on the oil price at which coal to liquids breaks even?

There is NO specific source of energy that is acceptable to the Left/Environmental coalition.

Perhaps we need James O’Keefe, “Watts Up with That?” and http://www.surfacestations.org/ to do surveys of the QUANTITY and SOURCES of energy used by:

Environmental Organizations - Sierra Club, Earth First, EDF, etc.

Celebrity Environmentalists - Gore, David de Rothschild, Philippe Cousteau, Charles-Prince of Wales, James Hansen, David Suzuki

Media “Stars” & Executives - Most of ‘Em

Hollywood Stars, Producerd & Directors - Streep, Harrelson, Ashley Judd, DiCaprio, Clooney

Then ask them ON CAMERA which sources of energy they deem acceptable. No “weasel word” answers such as “renewable”, “sustainable” or “environmentally sensible”. Nail them down to specific sources. If they answer, “I drive a Prius”, then ask them “where does the electricity come from to recharge your Prius?” Have an answer ready in case they are clueless.

Publish the results, sit back and watch the Audubon Society go at the Wind Energy crowd, the Save the Gopher Tortoise and the Solar Electric crown fight it out.

Popcorn!
