My grandfather was born near the time of Lincoln's assassination and he related that there were stories as to how John Wilkes Booth was alive and living somewhere. In short, the killing of a President is a "big deal" and stories always surface. Such stories are probably based upon a mistrust of those who govern(often with good reason.) by those who are governed.

you should read the book
50 YEARS IN THE CHURCH OF ROME, by Chinquay

He was a friend of Lincoln
lincoln feared a Jesuit conspiracy in the US, and the book makes claims of just that

written in the mid 1800’s
