Politico Boy Wobbly Wrote Only 5 Stories in 14 Weeks; Gripes About Overwork
NewsBusters ^ | February 2, 2015 | P.J. Gladnick

On Saturday, Newsbusters' Tom Blumer wrote about the work strain that young Mike Elk, a Politico reporter who wants to unionize his workplace, imagines himself to be enduring. Well, a quick check at Politico reveals that the Boy Wobbly wrote a grand total of five stories since October 16. On average only about one story every three weeks. Such a strain!

The best (and most laughable) part of the story is this money quote from Elk destined to live on for all eternity unto the end of time:

“I can’t work the kind of hours I did when I was 24,” says Elk, who is 28.

So how does the "tremendous" Elk workload stack up against his Politico colleagues? Here is a sampling of the Politico proletariat that Boy Wobbly wants to organize into a union:

Strange. Politico has the reputation for being a journalism sweat shop, with intense pressure to produce.

If your employees have this attitude, any pressure at all is intense

I wonder what kind of money the 28-year old Blumer brings in for this horrendous work schedule. My suspicion is that lots of folk would be more than willing to trade his horrendous job for their “easy” job.

Sorry, it’s Mr. Elk and not Mr. Blumer who has the horrendous job.

Mike Elk. MIKE ELK is the Politico Boy Wobbly. NOT Tom Blumer who first exposed his laughable griping at NewsBusters.

You may remember that a couple of years ago a Politico reporter was caught plagiarizing and was fired. It was a big story for a couple of days. The young woman in question is a friend of my son who is also a journalist and apparently the reason she plagiarized was that the intense and unforgiving production expectations at Politico were too much for her. It’s strange to read about such leisurely current work expectations after knowing about that incident.

There are probably working people out there in job situations where organizing may be justified. This ain’t one of them.

A lot of writers apparently do not like deadlines

this story?

In the old days a lot of newspapers just rewrote AP/UPI stories and added a couple of quick quotes from phone calls a lot of the time.

Just another day at Politico HQ:

"The boss said to get this here work table to the top floor, pronto!"

Why can I never find jobs like that?

Or the 30 YO who got paid $190,000 a year (Dallas ISD) and then paid her $50,000 when she was found with a bunch of actions, some illegal!

Yes, that’s the one. A very sweet girl who got in over her head and screwed up badly. A shame really.
