The future of the United States lies in North America. This is not a geographic truism, but a strategic imperative. Generations of Americans, distracted by far-flung crises, have long taken our own region for granted. This must change if the 21st century is to be an American century. The United States, Canada and Mexico are bound by a shared economic, environmental, demographic and cultural destiny. How we move forward together is key to our success.
In recognition of our shared destiny, the three countries should create a North American passport that would, over time, allow their citizens to travel, work, invest, learn and innovate anywhere in North America. Work, tourist and student visas are necessities in the modern world to regulate the flow of people between sovereign states.
In the North American context, much like within the European Union, our economies and societies are far more integrated than our immigration system recognizes -- and a North American passport, much like the EU passport, would align our laws with reality.

as a USA citizen, I would welcome affililation with Canada but every Canadian I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing...highly values their nation’s identity...and would not wish a merger (or any futher of a merger than the defense and economic essentially-merged status we now have).
As for Mexico, I for one have a high respect for most of the Mexicans I’ve met, and they work very hard too. I know there are some who do not fit that description, but there are some USA citizens .. .especially now under Obama’s Great Recession..who also do not. I just think that USA cannot afford a merger with Mexico at this time. Come back and propose something after Obama is out of office and we are able, hopefully, to correct the damage he’s inflicted on our country and our economy in particular. If we can rebuild a prosperous economy with jobs for people who want them.... that’s the time to propose big undertakings like a merger with Mexico. Not now. Especially not now with our all-time-record unemployment!!! Thanks.

We can see all the problems the euro and EU are having because of the economic differences from rich to poor countries. The problems with a North American Union would be similar.
Seems like they are already moving that direction.
I was just informed that I can’t even get into Mexico, if O want to walk across the International Bridge, without a passport anymore.
This has been true for traveling into the interior, like Mexico City or Cancun, for years.
I suspect this is part of our answer to the EU and we will become like them for currency and trade, increasing the market value of the dollar or North America currency, by 160 million consumers
I don’t think 130 million people in Mexico share our values, unlike Canaduhh....

Corporations have taken over government functions and have divided the world into their own kingdoms.
Not necessary.
But it does indicate the thoughts for the future of certain elites.
It’s not necessarily a bad idea, quite libertarian (the freedom to travel, not the new form of government ID).
The high speed rail of CA is meant for this.
It’s never meant for LA to SF but to move Mexicans up the Central Valley corridor and later be direct with Mexico.
I remember before 911 we did not need passports to go to Canada or Mexico.
