Everyone knew about Silver, but no one cleaned it up (Cuomo under scrutiny)
NYPOST.COM ^ | 1/22/15 | MICHAEL GOODWIN

Democrat Gov Andrew Cuomo had a great chance to reveal Albany's systemic corruption. His 2013 Moreland Commission was focused on Democrat Silver’s ties to law firms....but Cuomo abruptly shut it down. The US Atty remains furious at Cuomo and continues to probe Cuomo's actions. Cuomo boasted the panel would dig dirt...trace campaign donations, legislation and pork-barrel spending to connect the dots to corrupt quid pro quos. “We want to see who gives you money, the legislation you introduce and your member items.” He pulled the plug when nervous lawmakers, who had fought the panel’s subpoenas, agreed to toothless ethics rules. It was the biggest mistake of Cuomo’s first term, and now his second term begins with a scandal.

Back in 2004, when Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver blocked passage of the state budget with a series of bizarre objections, a frustrated Republican Gov. George Pataki demanded: “Who is your client?’’ The current 35-page federal complaint against Silver includes his repeated squashing of tort-law reforms; cooperating witnesses may have the goods on other official crooks. 70-year-old Silver---if he sees no way out of his jam---will no doubt sing like a canary.

Cuomo has big ambitions-—he’d sellout his own mother for a leg up the political ladder.

Too bad Andy has the charisma and presidential presence of a boiled kale stem.

Excuse me, but Mayor DimBlasio has already declared the existence of Silver’s “integrity” so what’s the problem?

I bet he will sing too, and I look forward to hearing it with great interest. Someone with his kind of power will have things to say on more than just unknown, behind-the-scenes kinds of people.

It was an indication of the mess he’s created for himself, that when Silver came out of the arraignment to face reporters he said, “ I HOPE I will be vindicated.”

In order to CATCH Republicans in some sort of wrong-doing, first there have to be Republicans present. When it comes to an investigation of NY state politics by the US attorney, just a little curious how they thought anybody but Democrats were involved at any level.

Maybe they could go after Bloomberg as the crypto-Republican? After all, he WAS registered as a “Republican” at one time.

I doubt it. He'll either

  1. get a very light sentence on condition that he dummys up forever, or
  2. suffers an unfortunate sudden illness. He is 70, after all.

NY state is the equivalent of the former East Germany, without the Stasi. Its a one party state, actually run by the bureaucracy, that is steadily in decline, when eventually its one-horse economy (Wall Street) will collapse. Even many Republicans are basically Democrats, or accept their perpetual minority status because they gain too.

Some insiders are saying that Cuomo’s closure of the Moreland Commission was a trick. He didn’t want to be seen as taking down a fellow Dem, so he closed down the commission and put the Feds on the case instead. Supposedly, his public resistance to Bharara was all an act, and he privately encouraged him to go after Silver.

Because of the way politicians behave in New York, many people find this highly credible. Cuomo may have even put the Post up to attacking him, because he knows it rallies his base.

Well we’ll see. I hope for whatever reasons that he trills his azz off. He had entrenched, long-standing power in a state like NY and a city like NYC. It would be very interesting.

Let’s wait and see what he says when the plea bargaining begins. It should get very interesting.

Isn’t this a great story? Love Goodwin.

I’m hoping this flood will rise to drown Cuomo.

He was separated at birth from Ted Bundy. Curtis Sliwa always calls him Andrew “Evil Eyes” Cuomo.
