(Note: This was written a month ago)
With 91-year-old Abdullah’s hospitalization with pneumonia Jan. 2, all eyes in Saudi Arabia immediately turned to Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz, the defense minister and the king’s 79-year-old half-brother.

Yet due to Salman’s own deteriorating health – those close to the palace say the crown prince is suffering from the early stages of dementia – a campaign is growing within Riyadh to bypass Salman and give the throne to Deputy Crown Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz, 69, another of the king’s half brothers, should Abdullah be deemed unfit to rule.

Both the crown prince and the deputy are seen as identical ideologically, and it is expected that their respected reigns would be short, as “place holders” for the next generation.

unfortunately the cesspool will remain a cesspool

But will it be able to maintain stability if there's a power struggle? This could get weird, I'd think.

Venice used to give the Doges a lot of power, paid them very well and picked only very old men who were more worried about reputation keeping, than making. I think the Sauds are all right here.

This is palace intrigue. Saudi Arabia isn’t on the verge of any kind of civil unrest. Its danger is encroachments from ISIS

This is just what the oil world needs at this critical moment — OPEC to be led by a 79-year-old king with dementia.

No. Once this generation collapses, then the Kingdom collapses. We must remember that this “country” is more the result of conquests that were made by the House of Saud in the period 1918-1921

This is a further unraveling of Sykes-Picot treaty between Britain and France. Saudi, Iraq, Iran, Syria etc are all constructs from post WWI

I don’t believe Saudi was an outcome of Sykes-Picot. Saudi was created thanks to Lawrence of Arabia — a bum boy for the Arabs.
