Fox has confirmed that it is in talks to revive its iconic supernatural horror procedural, The X-Files.

Speaking Saturday at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour, Fox TV executives Dana Walden and Gary Newman said they've been in talks not only with series creator Chris Carter, but stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, about the show's revival. Discussions to date have not been creative in nature but logistical; with Carter, Duchovny and Anderson all busy with their own projects, the biggest obstacle facing the reboot could be finding a time frame during which all three are free. Here's Walden:

How does everyone feel about this?

I like it, with new HD technology, I look at some of the old shows and in SD it doesn't do justice to the stories.

Aren’t those two a little, I don’t know, long in the tooth by now?

hell no, they only stopped because they couldn’t give the actor to renew the contract, they thought it would have gone for another 5 seasons.

While I really liked Duchovny, especially in the first few episodes, I think I summed up my feelings in a reply to another Freeper on another thread:
The X-Files? No!!! Because they went through so much conspiracy theory and sci-do material in the original X-Files that there is hardly anything new to do with it. Maybe if they could make a movie set in 2012 about the alien wars with the original cast that would be cool, but I wouldn’t see a need to watch a reboot. Plus, I fear that they wouldn’t capture the scare factor as well.

A better idea would be to take the conspiracy-side of things in X-files, add in the creepy big-brother technology/overtones of Person of Interest, extract out the meat of the real-life conspiracies of the IRS's political targeting, the NSA and DEA's domestic spying, the FDA and EPA's agenda-/money-based regulatory systems, the "big business" interests (prison-industrial, military-industrial, and medical-/agricultural-industrial complexes), and Agenda 21… all together as your setting… that could make for some damn scary psychological shit.

If they bring it back, it will have new writers, it isn’t going to be the same old X-Files.

They will definitely change it up.

One of my favorite shows of all time. Just think of what they will be able to do with 2010’s CGI, versus what they had in the ‘90’s.

Duchovny is mid-50s, Anderson mid-40s. Both still look OK, but both are probably past their prime earning years and would take a familiar role with some security, I’d guess.

I don’t think they could afford Vince Gilligan anymore, so I wonder just how good it will be.

IMHO, remakes are awful when they try too hard to follow the original. At most, give the original actors cameo roles as minor characters. The original series went really far downhill after the first seasons. I agree, I love watching the series on Netflix right now. Dated, but still bizarre and creepy, like that mutant dude who squeezes into your house’s ventilation to kill you.

Which would have stretched the show out to 2007, which is going on 8 years ago.

Most of the thrill I had with the original was the fact that the fx technology was dated, they still did a good job with subtlety and timing of what was going on.

CGI does not make good story.

Good story makes good story.

I don't know, but her underwear scene in S1E1 is worth the price of admission. :)
