What is the message that is really being sent by action films these days?

In the past there were lots of action movies involving average people who were put in dangerous situations that could realistically be managed through courage and skill, e.g. kidnap victims who manage to escape, gang of hoods terrorizing a small town, etc.

Now what we see in action movies are rare people like ex-CIA agents or retired Navy Seals that have to overcome impossible odds just to survive the movie. The movies even end with cliffhangers suggesting that even though the hero survived impossible odds, he will have to look forward to more danger in the sequel.

The message of actions films of the past seems to have been "With courage and a little luck the average guy can hope to stand up to his foes and win the good fight."

The message now seems to be "There is no chance in hell that you will be able to fight the massive, well-organized forces that are keeping you in your place. So just sit back and wait for an impossibly brave, skilled, and lucky savior to come save you."

So it makes perfect sense to me that action movie heroes in real life support gun control. After all, mere mortals like us can't expect to fight global drug cartels, rogue governments, Illuminati-like organizations, etc. It's best if we just hand over our gun, and if we don't like the way things are going then hopefully someone like Liam Neeson will come to save the day.

Really?

Unarmed French cops ran away from engaging Islamic terrorists.

If the police can’t protect you thanks to those same gun control policies, its open season for the bad guys.

And if you’re dead, whatever the government does afterwards is water under the bridge.

I don’t want stupid people like Liam Neeson and Eugene Robinson to put my life in the hands of cops who may not be able to put down a life-threatening situation.

Protecting my life and the lives of others if necessary - is first and foremost my responsibility. There is no other way around it.

Yes — this is the the message that is being pushed… for one simple reason: you cannot be allowed to think that you have your own destiny in your hands.
It's the same reason why the militia is painted in colors more derisive and despicable than terrorists are: because the armed people acting together are a danger to the elite.
