One congresswoman's office is floating the idea of bringing pencils to next week's State of the Union address in a tribute to the victims of the Charlie Hebdo newspaper terrorist attack.
"During the State of the Union, when POTUS talks about Charlie Hebdo and freedom of expression, every Dem stands up and holds a yellow #2 pencil in the air during the applause line. Thoughts?" wrote Eric Harris, the press secretary for Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis., in an email obtained by National Journal that was sent Tuesday to all Democratic press secretaries.

Harris said he received a "multitude of responses" to his email, most of them positive, and that he will check with the sergeant-at-arms about whether sharpened pencils might be prohibited from the State of the Union for safety reasons.

The proper tribute would have been to have a US Govt representative, if not the President, at the march in Paris last weekend. Pencils - you’ve got to be kidding.

Let me guess.. Hussein will showcase a Muslim who came to the aid of the hostages, or something like that. A Muslim will be spotlighted because Hussein is a Muslim himself and wants to vindicate Islam. Maybe the 5 Yemeni terrorists he just released from GITMO should be in the audience during his SOTU speech?
I think it would be most appropriate if at the State of Union all republicans at every so-called applause line would hold up a gun.
If they bring the pencils, better make certain their not sharpened, certainly wouldn’t want anyone poking an eye out when the fall asleep during the State of the Union address.
