Sam, the first openly gay NFL player...

More accurate to say "first openly gay ex NFL player" or "first openly gay wannabe NFL player."

Quite right since I don’t think he ever actually played in an NFL game. Maybe something like “first openly gay who signed an NFL contract and put on an NFL uniform during practice”.

More accurate to say “Tool whose drafting checked an important diversity box and allowed the allowed the Rams’ ownership to gain permission to escape the hellhole that is St. Louis to return to the just slightly less hellish Los Angeles.” :)

He was the first openly gay football player to be drafted and cut from an NFL team. The NFL currently doesn’t have an openly gay player on any of its team rosters.
