I quit watching the news on 11/7/12 and feel great
We have a scaled down deal w Comcast where we get great hi speed internet and just local scaled down channels and news. No CNN or FoxNews. So for the first time in a while I tuned in PBS `TV News at 6PM just to get a flavor of what was going on
I get most news from the internet
Nice, no delay. Cool! Wait, what? Commercials? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! [Just kidding] Thanks!
(One America News)I like them, too!! You can a good synopsis of everything going on around the world in a half hour. Then I turn the TV off.
You’re so right; 24 hour cable news has them scrambling to create news just to fill space.
I stopped watching even Fox when they had Al “Tawana Brawley” Sharpton on years ago and were calling him “reverend”.
Local news (that warns of construction projects, weather, local crime - things that might have an immediate and direct impact on me) are much more important than the big networks; all of that news can be found between this site and a couple of others. TV news outside of your immediate local (and even that to some extent) has become a very inefficient way to receive news; while they tell you about an upcoming sensational news story then expect you to wait through twenty minutes of filler news and commercials to see it, many people have already found it online and are paying no mind to the TV anymore.
BTW, the 24 hour news cycle has directly led to outlets fabricating and exaggerating stories; they are so desperate for anything to report, they’ll make something up if there is no real news. Whether it is polar bears falling into the ocean as their ice floes melt or women being beaten into the kitchen at big financial firms, they’ll have something that will draw a segment of the viewing population - and it will spur the next crusade for a group of people with nothing else to do...
One thing I have noticed is that the commercials seem much more synched between stations now; in the past if you were watching TV, you’d watch two shows simultaneously - going to the second choice anytime the main program went to commercial. Now your second choice is on commercial at the same time...so I guess if you really want to watch something, have a book handy for your second choice.
I pretty much DVR everything I watch. I don’t watch Fox News, or any other news channel for that matter. They all are pretty much behind the curve (compared to here), and I find a lot of the Fox news sway toward the establishment Republican side. I can get a better feel of what’s going on here - and without the obligatory “we gotta have an idiot liberal’s viewpoint”.
Yes.....that really irks me, too.
“I can get a better feel of whats going on here - and without the obligatory we gotta have an idiot liberals viewpoint.”
Well said (and too true).
Well Dish Network tells us that they “gave us” the Blaze to replace Fox. The Blaze was already on Dish when they removed Fox news. Network providers give you NOTHING, you pay (an dearly I might add) for everything worth while watching. There are literally hundreds of “garbage” programs on either Dish or Direct that are nothing more than that, garbage. Out of over 200 channels on Dish, not more than 5 or 10 are worth watching. I will get my “news” right here on Free Republic and make my own decisions without having some talking head tell me what I just heard.
I agree; I rarely watch TV news, and then it is just local news. As for other programs, I like some of the nature and history documentaries, as well as some light-hearted stuff (”Impractical Jokers” and “World’s Dumbest” on True TV).
I have news for you. Even here on FR the news in general is depressing but the commentary from Freepers helps to take it all in.
As I understand the situation, there were problems with the contract negotiation. So Fox won't be back to Dish until that issue is settled--and who knows how long that may be.
On the bright side, our local cable company picked up The Blaze. Now, I need to remind my son to watch it, since he had tweeted the cable provider several times to request them to carry it.
If I don't renew the link every half hour or so, the streaming slows, and finally stops. This may be because I have a slow DSL connection. It's also odd to sit and watch a dead picture during the commercials. There's also no opportunity for record or delay the signal.
Need to get away from MSM
I disagree on CNN. I tune to them when there's any sort of breaking news coverage, although Fox is steadily improving.
The only time I watch MSNBC is when Rachel Maddow and Chris Hayes are on the screen at the same time. It's fun to try and tell them apart, which I usually can't. The best key to figuring out which one is which is to remember that Maddow is the more masculine one.
“You can get more real news from Free Republic headers on your cellphone while waiting at a red light...”
Darn right.
The only thing I watch on Fox is The Kelley File and once in a great while The Five.
Megan Kelley is smoking hot.
Kimberly Guillfoyle has amazing legs.
Other than that all my news is from FR.
I watch Outnumbered to see Shannon Bream. When I’m home.
