Scrawl found on United jet, attendants fired when they refuse to fly

On July 14, 2014, United crews departing from San Francisco International Airport bound for Hong Kong found the words "BYE BYE" in six-inch high letters alongside two faces, one smiling and the other one also smiling, but with eye brows drawn in a more sinister expression. The writing was traced in an oil slick from the auxiliary engine in the Boeing 747-4000 aircraft's tail cone.

In the 26-page complaint, the flight attendants said that the markings constituted a"credible and specific threat to the safety of the aircraft." The flight attendants informed United officials they were uncomfortable flying unless extra security measures were taken. They asked for deplaning the 300-plus passengers and a safety sweep to ensure that no explosive devices were planted on the plane.

I don’t blame them. This sounds like a power struggle. Some manager is angry at the flight attendants for daring to defy his or hers direct orders. If they are in a union, this is one of those times they need a neutral party to intervene.

Says a lot about where we are now after our freedom and sense of safety has been insidiously decreased over the past several decades. Sad. We will lose much more if we don’t start to fight back.

I’m with the flight attendants on this one. Should not have anyone defacing an aircraft during these tumultuous times.

Here is the key..

“The writing was traced in an oil slick from the auxiliary engine in the Boeing 747-4000 aircraft’s tail cone”

If people realized how many ARABIC people work in the maintenance or service areas of airports .. they would never fly. Can’t get me on an airplane.

There has been a rash of small mishaps going on now for a couple of years; blown out tires; ventilation issues; food and water issues; doors that won’t properly seal, etc.

When are the airlines going to take this seriously ..??

If I were an Attendant, I wouldn’t fly that plane either; even if it was a joke to “terrorize” the public.

It has been proven recently time after time that Muzzie sympathizers or members of radical Muzzie groups need not BE "Arabic" to be a terrorist.

I think the firing of these flight attendants is outrageous. They are in the industry and I think they'd be able to suss out what looks like an actual threat and what is an insider "joke". I'm sure the management of the airline doesn't want this to get out in order not to lose ticket sales, thus the witnesses to this were gotten rid of.

How many passengers would have refused to fly if they had known about the message?

Were they notified?

Probably not.

Money before safety.

Lemme guess

The oil shouldn’t have been there, its a sign there could have been engine failure??

Boeing 747-400 airliners do not have “auxiliary engines” in their tail cones. They have two gas turbine Auxiliary Power Units (APU) that provide electric power on the ground when the main engines are shutdown and the plane is not connected to ground power. The APU is NOT a flight safety critical item. If one APU was leaking oil and not functional, there was a second APU available plus the four engine driven generators for electrical power on the aircraft.

Interesting...With "5" engines, no wonder they make such great freight haulers.../s
