Huckabee in 2013: Common Core Is “Near and Dear To My Heart”
gotnews.com ^ | January 3, 2015 | Charles C. Johnson

Former Arkansas Governor wrote in 2013 that Common Core state standards are “near and dear to my heart,” Gotnews.com has learned.

The pro-Common Core stance of the former governor is of new interest now that Huckabee is contemplating a run for the presidency in 2016.

Here’s an article from the Tulsa World from June in 2013.

“Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee urged Oklahoma lawmakers to resist throwing out new educational standards the Legislature approved back in 2010.”

“ In a letter to Oklahoma lawmakers this week, he said the Common Core state standards have been “near and dear to my heart” since he served as governor in Arkansas.”

““And it’s disturbing to me there have been criticisms of these standards directed by other conservatives, including the RNC (Republican National Committee). The truth of the matter is, these criticisms are short-sighted.””

I can hear the spin from MSM already.

If alleged “conservative” Huckabee likes it, then Jeb and the other establishment candidates are okay for liking it, too.

This is a non issue for me. If anyone thinks local control still REALLY exists they live n a dream world. Should it? Yes. Does it? Largely, no. Favoring common standards shouldn’t be a big deal. After all testing is standardized. The deal is, I don’t trust the other states to give their input.

Still, this will not make me not vote for Huckabee because I do trust him. He would at least have rational standards to go with all that money that is already being poured into schools.

Three issues with Common Core.

1. It is a ruse by its creators to get the federal government further entrenched in education. I don’t have a problem with a voluntary set of standards that set a high bar for excellence. But this will get the Feds involved.

2. Education is completely hijacked by liberals. Liberals have DESTROYED education since the early 70s. Failed liberal idea after failed liberal idea have gutted the US education system. This is simply another liberal idea that will fail.

3. Common Core’s recommended and approved material is completely rewriting American and World history into the mold of the liberal world view.

I agree. Common Core stinks, is not good education, provides a slippery slope to total government indoctrination via the schools. It muddies rather than clarifies basic concepts.

Leave school curricula to local school boards. This will preserve American diversity in problem-solving techniques. If everyone learns the same thing taught in the mandated same way, "one ring will rule them all". We will lose the diverse ways of attacking problems which is an American hallmark.

“Favoring common standards shouldn’t be a big deal.”

These are ivory tower standards designed to alienate the kids from their parents.

Exactly who defines the standards is the big deal. But I will be honest, the public schools sold out to the liberal agenda a long time ago. This will make no difference.
