Labor pains for ‘Downton Abbey’ in Season 5
New York Post ^ | January 2, 2015 | Robert Rorke

Socialism has come to “Downton Abbey.”

The year is 1924 and Ramsey McDonald has just been elected as prime minister. With the Labor Party’s antipathy toward the cosseted likes of the Crawley family, Sir Robert (Hugh Bonneville) is having the upper-crust equivalent of a meltdown in Sunday night’s fifth-season premiere of the Julian Fellowes drama.

Wearing a zip-up sweatshirt and corduroys, a very jolly Bonneville sits down at the Lamb’s Club in midtown to discuss the momentous changes that await the Crawleys, as the world clock brings them closer to the Great Depression of 1929.

I just started watching this series a few days ago on the Web and really got into it. I've been binge watching it since and am now in the middle of Season 2. I hope to have watched all episodes by next weekend.

I really enjoy historical type dramas and this one is great...and addicting. Another Brit production I really liked was the British "Fall of Eagles" featuring a Starship Enterprise captain as Lenin.

The Crawleys are good people, but “house poor.”

I like how it is historically correct. I watched a PBS special about the guy who makes it so ... I have my favorites like: Mr. Bates, Daisy, Mr.Carson and that nasty guy, Thomas Barrow. Plus a few others.

They did make one minor error. The newspaper publisher was wearing a type of fedora that didn’t come into fashion until about 20 years later.

Good catch. What I’m waiting to see is how Selfridge ends. I know the real story of him just want to see how they will run it.

I’m enjoying the same regimen having received the seasons 1-4 box set as a Christmas gift. Made it to the end of season 2 last night.

Found a gem on IMBD where Hugh Bonneville describes the show’s appeal - “It’s Breaking Bad with tea instead of meth.”

I really enjoy the series, too. Lately they’ve been rerunning episodes and I get sucked in, even though I know what is going to happen. It’s that good. They do manage to insert a little leftyism, but it doesn’t spoil it for me. I’m looking forward to Sunday night!

I binged all 4 seasons several months ago and have suffered many months of withdrawals waiting for it to start again.

I think they haven’t really been pushing lefty politics that much. Branson is a chip on the shoulder socialist but he comes off as something of a boor.

Loved "Fall of Eagles".

Different from Downton Abbey though in that it was historically based and not the big budget production that Abbey is.

Captain Picard played a great Lenin. The only slight problem I had with “Fall of Eagles” was the Russian Bolsheviks speaking with posh Brit accents.

If you want the details with all the spoilers on Season 5 of Downton Abbey, the Heroes and Heartbreakers website, Downton Abbey, has links to Naz Keynejad's excellent summaries of each individual episode (1 thru 8 as well as the Christmas episode, all previously shown in England).

Season 5 and producer/writer Julian Fellowes did get their share of criticisms in Naz's reviews and in comments on her reviews.

Downton Abbey s excellent...outstanding in fact. But although their budget, when adjusted for inflation, was lower and their “ambitions” not quite as grand I still like Upstairs/Downstairs better.

I SO agree with you!
While DA is entertaining - especially Maggie Smith - Upstairs surpasses it by a mile...just my opinion.

i agree as well that Upstairs Downstairs was better. i believe ill health of one of the writers caused the series demise.

This is so far from the days of the brilliant “Upstairs, Downstairs” I don’t know where to begin. If you knew anything about the class system and the times when this drama takes place, you would reject it out right.

The “you” I’m using is generic, not directed at you, FRiend.

Upstairs, Downstairs came to its natural end - about 1930. This program can’t hold a candle to that masterpiece. Luckily, I have it on DVD.
