Poll: Republican Voters Overwhelmingly Want Members to Remove Boehner as Speaker

Republican voters nationwide overwhelmingly want their House representative to elect somebody other than Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) as Speaker of the House, a new poll from Pat Caddell’s organization Caddell Associates shows.

A whopping 60 percent of voters who voted for Republicans in the last election either definitely or probably want their member of Congress to elect someone other than Boehner on Jan. 6, when Congress convenes, according to the poll. The voters were asked: “As you may know the new Congress will select its leaders in January. If it were up to you, would you elect John Boehner to continue as Speaker of the House or would you elect someone new?”

In response to that question, 34 percent of the GOP voters surveyed said they definitely want someone other than Boehner and 26 percent said they probably want someone other than Boehner. Only 11 percent said they definitely want to keep Boehner and an additional 15 percent said they probably want Boehner to stay. So the poll says some 60 percent of GOP voters want Boehner gone, while just 25 percent want him to stay. Fifteen percent in the poll either don’t know, or are undecided on Boehner’s future.

In addition to that condemnation of Boehner, 64 percent of the GOP voters surveyed either strongly or somewhat agree that Boehner, as Speaker of the House, has been “ineffective in opposing President Obama’s agenda.” Only 24 percent either somewhat or strongly disagree. Twelve percent didn’t know.

Pretty logical.

The 2014 vote was about doing X, and Boehner refuses to do X. In fact, he’s done all he can to thwart the incoming congress from doing X.

Therefore, what the people voted for is being opposed by Boehner, and the people are now opposed to Boehner.

The biggest, best and most accurate poll of all, November 4, 2014, and this spray-tanned crybaby still couldn’t get it right or, more likely, didn’t want to get it right.

Pubbie Representatives don’t have the backbone to stand up to Boehner.

He will again be elected speaker.

The opposition may give lip service, but they won’t do anything.

From another thread:

Marsha Blackburn should be asked unofficially if she would be willing, and if she says yes, then she should remain quiet while Conservatives prepare to appoint her.

She has the right experience and the right stuff to ascend to Speaker.

And it is important that Conservatives put her name out there while she shuns the cameras and mics. But Conservatives must know ahead of time that she’s willing to accept.

I don't think it matters. If enough Republicans vote against Boehner, there will be enough Democrats to make up the difference. The Democrats know what will happen if Boehner is deposed, and they fear that worse.

It's how a leftist Republican has held on to the Texas Speaker of the House position for the past few legislative sessions.

No. That all happens behind closed doors. They caucus to determine who their choice is. Then, they take it to the full House, knowing that choice will be elected.

They surely are not stupid enough to have a party fight in the House chamber.

I’ve always found polls like this amusing.

They should first have asked those being polled who the Speaker of the House is.

Only those who correctly identify him should then be asked their opinion on whether he should be retained.

You see this all the time in polls. Obscure aspects of policy are questioned, and (surprise!) it turns out 85% or 90% of the public has a considered opinion on the subject.

I strongly suspect that in most of these cases <50% of those questioned know anything at all about the subject and logically should not be polled on a subject on which they’re completely ignorant.

No. That all happens behind closed doors. They caucus to determine who their choice is. Then, they take it to the full House, knowing that choice will be elected.

That's not how Speaker election works. All members of the House vote, not just the majority party.

Party members are expected to vote for their party nominee, or at least someone in their party. But, there's an "escape clause": all Boehner needs is for enough Democrats to vote "present" or abstain. The Speaker only must receive a majority of the votes for an individual. "Non-votes" aren't counted.

If Boehner doesn't get a majority vote on the first ballot, I think it's almost certain that he will get a majority on the second ballot, either through explicit votes from Democrats or by abstentions. The election process and history is discussed here:

I doubt that sufficient votes can be found to take the Speaker’s chair away from Boehner. If you set out to unthrone the King, you had best be sure that you get it done as the retribution will be both swift and severe.

What we don’t see that’s going on is the effects of corruption on members. Boehner is answering to the moneyed interests of the party and they control the keys to the reelection strongbox. A number of members will be afraid to back an attempt that may fail because they know that the campaign spigot will be turned off and they will have to face a well financed primary challenge. This is the incumbent protection racket in full cry and one of the rules of that racket is that you must go along with their choice of leader.

But would JB waltz into that trap? Could he bear the headline Boehner Retains Speakership with Democratic Support? America just ousted as many RATS as possible. If their House of the People is usurped by the RATS they just pulled the rug under, won’t the impetus to primary Boehner and his apparatus skyrocket to the top of the electoral to-do list?
