cars had no seat belts

When I was in early grade school, I had a recurring nightmare about a trip in the family's '58 Dodge convertible that probably occurred in 1959- my mom drove me to her parents' house on a hilly back road for some emergency I no longer recall, and she had that thing flat-out flying. Scared the H out of me, and I relived it in my sleep for a number of years.

Looking back, what could go wrong? Bias-ply tires, small drum brakes, steel dashboard with a mirror mounted on a spike jammed in the center, a mushy, wallowing suspension... and not a seat belt in sight.

The first Christmas I can remember, I was 4, we didn’t even have a tree or a stick. It was 50 miles to the nearest tree.
Mom fixed up a few candles with bows and decorations on the table.
What temptation! A few days later, mom caught her little pyromanic (me) lighting them! Oh the trouble me and matches had while living my youth!

Same here! And in the hot New Mexico summer we cooled off by running behind the DDT sprayer truck! Wetted down well!
Hm. Maybe that is why mosquitoes don’t trouble me too much! Now if it would just kill the ticks!

Correct. I don’t think anyone even bothers with it anymore, we sure don’t.

And that's how it goes. It didn't get banned, it became dysfunctional and unusable. Like a lot of things. :(

Last year I painted/decorated the porch pumpkins to keep them going until the New Year, that was it. This year we are "complete heathens".

Must be something to do with the regime and culture. I lack any desire to participate and play along.

So sorry you were sick but the silver lining was that you avoided the clean up! :)

All the best to you in the New Year for your good health, home construction and rebirth.

And, there were those days when you lungs tickled (best way I can think of describing it) when you breathed. And you still spent the afternoon outside doing kid stuff.

I remember it from age five or so. It was heavy and stuck together. Pulling it apart was an art, the essence of which escaped my sister and I, as we hung great globs of it on the tree. It was up to my Mom to do “clean-up”.

We liked to drape the tinsel over the rails of the American Flyer train tracks around the tree to watch the sparks. This was strictly prohibited behavior, but we couldn’t resist.

Two words:
Lawn Darts
Good times.

I bought a set of Lawn Jarts (so the box said) at a garage sale for $1.
The lady said "be careful now..."
The box clearly said (to the effect)
Adult use only.

They were fun!
For adults.

My a-hole ex tossed them in the trash.

Looking at that photo, I have to ask a bigger question...why oh why did they cut the bangs of little girls so short? Why?!? My early grade school photos (1st Communion) have me w/1 inch of hair oddly at the front of my head.

TInsel used to be a wonderful addition to the tree and always a little bit dangerous if any got on the plug of a light string while being tested and then strung.

then the EPA (thanks for nothing Dick) got a hold of it and tinsel was never the same it became a mylar plastic slick thing that barely stays on anything other than the floor and the bottom of my socks. I hate it

I remember my sisters and I taking several hours to put on the tinsel. Sometimes my oldest brother would come in and throw the tinsel at the tree. He said it all looked the same to him. For that reason he never got to help with the job - which I think was his intention all along.

In our town we have a Lutheran church which still celebrates St. Lucia Day. Each year they chose a girl to wear the crown with the candles. One of these girls told me that she remembers that they put the crown on her head at the last minute because it was so heavy. Also, that it was very warm with four candles lit. she was happy when the event was over. However, it is still a beautiful service.

And boys played marbles and girls played jacks.

I remember saving the tinsel from year to year too. After a few years it needed replacing because it would break and get shorter an shorter.

I recall an abundance of dog poop with tinsel in it around the neighborhood when I was a kid.
