Rep. Michael Grimm announced late Monday that he plans to resign, one week after the Republican Staten Island congressman admitted to federal tax evasion.

Grimm, who was re-elected to a third term representing New York's 13th District in November, said in a statement that he would step down effective Jan. 5.

"This decision is made with a heavy heart, as I have enjoyed a very special relationship and closeness with my constituents, whom I care about deeply," he said. "The events which led to this day did not break my spirit, nor the will of the voters. However, I do not believe that I can continue to be 100% effective in the next Congress, and therefore, out of respect for the Office and the people I so proudly represent, it is time for me to start the next chapter of my life."

DEPOPULATE ‘Rats/progressives/socialists/criminals/deceivers/RINOS/totalitarians/scumbags/etc., etc. from the body politic.

HOORAY Michael Grimm! Best wishes on your new endeavors. Perhaps we’ll get someone who will speak to the limitations/criminality of BIG GOVERNMENT without something hanging over their head.

He’s accused of hiding $1M in pre-tax income, so maybe in megatax NYC, of owing a half a million in taxes. That makes him a better target than Fat Eric, but how about Al Sharpton, who’s owed 8 times that for years. He doesn’t get sent to prison; he gets sent to the White House!

Not necessarily. Staten Island is a bit of a holdout. One of the reasons that they wanted to secede, I think.

That may be so. But I consider any working taxpaying citizen doing everything they can to evade (I know the difference between ‘evade’ and ‘avoid’, BTW) as much taxes to this government as he can a civic duty.

Grimm faced Democratic Party nominee Domenic Recchia in the general election. Grimm was endorsed by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, the United Transportation Union, and the Humane Society Legislative Fund.[43][44] Grimm defeated Recchia on election night, November 5, 2014.

According to Politico, in April 2014 Grimm became "the first sitting House Republican to stop denying the science that humans cause climate change." Speaking about his views on global warming, Grimm stated: "The majority of respected scientists say that it’s conclusive, the evidence is clear. So I don’t think the jury is out.”[73][74]

Grimm has expressed support for immigration reform[55] and was one of six Republicans to vote against an amendment that would have resumed deportation of “Dreamers.”[56]

I wish he’d resign only after being sworn in for the new term.

But here we go, we absolutely must keep this seat out of the filthy hands of the drooling, slack-jawed, Staten Island democrats.
