More than 2,000 people stood behind Barbara Owens as she silently kissed her son's name that is etched into a memorial for slain police officers.
Owens whose son Derrick was a Cleveland police officer when he was killed chasing drug dealers on March 1, 2008 was among the some 2,500 people who showed up Saturday at the Sea of Blue rally to support police.
"We're thankful to see all the people that came out," said Derrick Owens father, Wayne. "I know they're not all out here for my son, but I personalize it. It feels good."
The rally on Saturday was organized to contrast nationwide unrest over fatal police shootings, including the Nov. 22 shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice at Cudell Recreation Center by a rookie Cleveland police officer.
People wearing blue to support the police enveloped Public Square on Saturday. The group silently marched to the Greater Cleveland Peace Officers Memorial across on Lakeside Boulevard and West 3rd Street.
Some carried signs that said "All lives matter" and "Police lives matter."

Wow, a peaceful march without violence or mayhem. Definitely not a leftist crowd.
I do believe we have reached a turning point. More people will feel sympathy for the murdered policemen than for the killed lawbreakers. This can still fluctuate, but we shall see.
Mayor de Blasio is forced to show some modicum of support for the people guarding his family and his staff.
I’ll know for sure, that the worm has turned, when I see Al Sharpton forced to walk back some of his statement and give up some of what he considers his power. If he loses his show; it’s a clear win for our side. I don’t know if MSNBC is brave enough to do that.
Nope. Just the fear of having Sharpton's supporters march on them will keep MSNBC in line.
Saw this on the news tonight and thought, great, a step towards turning things around.
Then I thought, I sure hope these brave people aren’t identified by the lefty nut-jobs out there and targeted.
Cleveland Rocks.
Ohio ping
MSNBC execs agree with Sharpton on everything. They would see it as cowardliness to take away the podium from such a great political leader (in their eyes). They are of the same pond-scum that Herr Sharpton formed from.
