“That steep bump in price is a result of Aetna’s reacting to a feature in the Affordable Care Act, a law that Karlson said of with a laugh, “I literally had no idea that it would affect me at all.”

Typical liberal thinking. The laws they support and enact, they think wont apply to them.

He, among millions in the politically ‘right’ [left] venues, will be plaintively be withholding their Democrat votes for a ‘subsidy’.

The rest of us out here in unrepresented America [Thank you, Mr. Suntan) will be fending for ourselves it seems.

It must be nice where you can laugh off having to suddenly pay an extra $600/month in taxes.

Ye gods, he's paying almost $15,000 a year in premiums alone? Wonder what his deductibles and co-pays look like.

We can't afford insurance. And thus we don't have any. That's the long and short of it.

You mean a deadline for an egregious, invalid, unconstitutional federal act so-called ACA (AKA Obamacare)?

The only thing that’s dead should be that stupid and illegal federal act. The states should nullify it unless or until it is repealed. I’ve personally nullified it.

"It's like, I'm happy that I have insurance, but I wish I could have the insurance that I want," he said. "I feel I can adapt to whatever I have, and we are, but, I guess it's like I didn't realize I had a good thing."

Yeah we all had a "good thing" until Obama was immaculated.

Be happy for what we decide is best for you, peasant.

I submitted a paper application last week of November but keep getting “you need to enroll by Dec. 31” notices. Website does not show whether or not they received it and when I call: “We are experiencing unusually heavy traffic. Please call back later”. Seems to be nothing further I can do — except send another application?

So I wondered what happened that caused “Aetna’s reacting to a feature in the Affordable Care Act”.

So I soiled myself by even clicking, and here's what I found:

The Affordable Care Act mandated a set of “essential health benefits” that all insurance plans had to cover, which included preventative services, ER visits, pediatric vision and dental care and mental health care. That mandate rendered many plans non-compliant with the law.

Pre-existing plans, or grandfathered plans, were allowed to continue under the ACA, but only if insurers made no significant changes to coverage. And in response to the troubled launch of HealthCare.gov last year, the Obama administration has allowed the option of other non-compliant plans continuing through 2017.

But not all states or insurers have taken up that option, or maintained it for their customers.

Although Karlson’s non-compliant plan was allowed to continue in Obamacare’s first year, Aetna pulled the plug for 2015 ...

... Despite the big increase in price, Karlson was ready to stay with an Aetna plan.

That changed when he called a rep for Aetna “to check on something. That was when the person I spoke to said, ‘Oh, just so you know, there's no out-of-network coverage,’ “ Karlson recalled.

In other words, he'd have to pay out of pocket for any doctors who weren't in Aetna’s network of providers.

That was a problem for him because “a good deal of our doctors are out of network” and their services had been covered by the old plan, Karlson said.

Why is there a deadline for signing up for insurance? Why can’t I buy insurance from whomever I want whenever I want? Just like car insurance, home insurance, life insurance or whatever?
