I don’t own guns but I think that would be a stupid place to keep a gun. But let’s leave that question for another day. Instead let’s suppose reasons why she might have a gun.

The reason the mom had a gun close at hand is because she has been a victim of a stalker who has made very lurid threats against her. OR
The reason the mom had a gun close at hand is because there have been a series of home invasions in their neighborhood and one woman was raped and beaten.
The reason the mom had a gun close at hand is because she works as a public defender and has been threatened by angry defendants and family members. Many who are in gangs.
So with the gun gone, what next?
And an ass-whoopin when they finally got home.

This makes these idiots liable when children have an accident with those guns they told them to grab against the parents teachings to not go near them.

Now, that innocent 19yo ‘Teen Ager’ in 9th grade has a built in excuse when caught with a gun.
“I took it from my _________’s girlfriend/boyfriend/babydaddy/whoever so I could turn it in to my Teach... You know, like that lady says in the movie we show in school”
Thinking about it, probably a good idea for people in NYC and areas where the ferals are revolting (Of course they are revolting!!! Haven’t had a bath in 3 weeks)to keep their hands where they can be seen when in the proximity of ANY Policeman....
