The Empire Strikes Back: Jeff Sessions out as Budget Committee Chair
Red State ^ | December 18th, 2014 | streiff

Posted on 12/19/2014 6:52:10 AM PST by xzins

Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions is out as chair of the Senate Budget Committee.

**"Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) is giving up his bid to become the next Budget Committee chairman — deferring to Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and eliminating the only competitive chairmanship battle in the incoming GOP Senate majority.

"Sessions has been the panel’s top Republican for the past four years but Enzi technically retains seniority over the Alabaman on the committee and said several weeks ago that he would challenge Sessions for the chairmanship."**

This is going to portrayed as a simple matter of seniority. It isn’t. That story has the same veracity and, indeed, the same source as the story that Senator Ted Cruz’s opposition to Obama’s immigration power grab led to the approval of stalled Obama nominees: Mitch McConnell.

Sessions has been serving as the top Republican on the committee for the past four years and was in line to take the chairmanship after the GOP won control of the Senate this month.

**"But since then, Sessions has undercut party leaders with his strident opposition to President Obama’s immigration action, even raising the specter of another fiscal showdown that resembles previous confrontations with the White House. Party leaders are eager to fight back against the president, but in a more measured way in line with their desire to show that they are up to the task of governing.

That has provided an opening for Enzi, whose name-out-of-a-hat seniority gives him the standing to challenge Sessions and who is pitching himself as a less-confrontational alternative.

Conservative activists say GOP leaders are backing Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) for the chairmanship because he would be a more reliable party man.

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other members of his team have publicly stayed out of the contest, but conservative activists nevertheless say they are quietly backing Enzi because he would be a more reliable party man.

Gaston Mooney — who served as an aide to former senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who often clashed with McConnell’s leadership team — wrote in an article last week in Conservative Review: “If Sessions loses the chair of the budget committee, it is only under the orders and direction of McConnell.”"**

While Mike Enzi has a solid voting record he is a reliable tool of the Senate leadership. The hard hitting analysis that Jeff Sessions brought to the Budget Committee will now become the watered-down pap Mitch McConnell wants.

“Honestly, folks, voting GOP any further is just as detrimental to the Nation as voting D. They are one and the same.”

No they are not. You need not look any further than the states to see that there is an enormous difference between Republican state legislatures and Democrat state legilatures. It is the difference between Arizona and California, or Texas and New York.

I agree that the Republican leadership at the federal level has been compromised, but they are not the party.

We just need to elect MORE Republicans. If we keep doing more of the same, we should eventually have enough Republicans that we can start be free again. We can start to have representation?

Thanks Kentucky for voting for McConnell because the RINO continually reveals “He’s a REAL WINNER for the American People and the Nation.”

“The whole system will have to collapse before any semblance of sanity is restored.”

That’s what I’m waiting for. It will ironically be our only hope.

“how a minority of RINOs continue to hold sway over an overwhelming majority of conservatives makes no sense to me. There is something wrong with this picture. Somebody has to explain it.”

OK. I will. But you won’t like it. You noted that a minority of RINOs hold sway over an overwhelming majority of conservatives. You need to re-examine your premises.

There was a vote early this week on amnesty. A procedural vote. About 20 senators voted with Ted Cruz. Then some of them dropped off on the later budget vote. So, less than 20%. That’s nowhere near a majority.

“And here we sit, doing nothing. Ok, so not entirely nothing - at least we voted “R” because “R” is ‘better’ than “D”, right? Right?!?! Lol. Honestly, folks, voting GOP any further is just as detrimental to the Nation as voting D. They are one and the same.”

Yup.

The gop and democrats have been joined at the hip since the late 19th century.

Balderdash. What you’re seeing on display is the heart and soul of the gop wing of the uniparty in action.

Not mentioned or hardly mentioned

1)Sessions decided himself to bow out
2)Sessions has nothing but praise for Enzi, is he a liar?

“My good friend Mike and I have been close since we both entered the Senate together 18 years ago. We will long remain good and close friends. We have talked and I am deferring to his seniority so that he can lead the Budget Committee as its Chairman beginning in 2015,” Sessions said in a statement. “Mike graciously deferred to me two years ago after he timed out on [the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee] as Ranking Member, and it has been my enormous privilege to serve as the panel’s Ranking Member these last four years, as well as to serve as the Judiciary Ranking Member for the two years before that.”

3)GOP leaders don’t chose the Chairman, the committee members do.

Some people seem to be going around looking for reasons to be unhappy because they like complaining. While I would have definitely preferred Sessions this is nothing to cry over, let alone the Armageddon some people think it is.

Back to the good old "bridges to nowhere" agenda, and government as giant Pubbie money-teat. We lost the Senate in 2006 because the public saw the pork and the corruption, and Nancy Pelosi and Rahm Emmanuel picked it up as a congressional campaign theme -- Pubbies were easy to campaign against on that theme.

Now here we go again. Here come the bag men!

Frankly, in the spirit of “cooperation”, a [euphemism] for surrender, why not just relect Reid.

That's not a throwaway. Remember the "Gang of 14" of recent evil memory?

Well, two can play that game.

GOP Tea Party senators should vote for Reid for majority leader, to deprive McConnell of the post -- "Revenge is a dish best served cold."

And think about it - - what would the Senate look like, and what would its politics look like, if the majority leader was really a weak "minority-majority" leader serving at the pleasure of the Tea Party? All sorts of senators would suddenly -- gasp!! -- matter.

Learn to use the methods of the Founders. Set faction against faction and power against power. Those coalitions must constantly be changing and dynamic for conservative gains. We must also control the thoughtspace. That means vouchers for education and keeping the Internet regulation and tax free.

We’re winning on abortion and gun rights, so we need to follow those same models for victory over fiscal policy, immigration, etc.

This sets back the conservative cause. Sessions nis worth more than 10 McConnels.

Agreed. He kept his cool and will fight when the odds are in his favor. Sessions is the real deal. I’m sure he has got something in play. This was not winnable in my opinion. The rest of the country keeps voting for one side or the other of the same coin.

Sen Sessions - thanks for fighting for the American people even while the Republican Party sells us to TPTB.

We need a broom to sweep all of these “Uniparty traitors” out of office No discernable difference between them. Both parties got together, wrote bills that consolidate their power, wrote each other billion dollar checks, and went home for the holidays. A curse on them all!
