Sounds like a battle of egos more than anything else. They said they would not fight, not because they were cowards, but because they didn’t have enough weapons. Some people hate being disagreed with, no matter if the dispute may have some merit. This is a dumb decision. They are taking over 50 trained men and shooting them, mostly due to a power struggle. Meanwhile, scores of those kidnapped Nigerian Girls are still missing from their homes.
Meanwhile we promote Bowe Bergdahl and give Bradley/Chelsea Manning a free sex change operation.
Once I read a story that when they were searching for those missing girls in the forest, some civilians were only armed with bows and arrows. You can imagine one's reaction. So maybe it has to do with the soldiers not having proper weapons.
This execution sounds like a bad idea. It's a big nation, 176 million, so I'm not sure if it is a sign they could be losing their grip. It is worrisome.
This will result in fewer mutinies. Basic economics.

Pure terrorism is why Boko Haram, ISIS, the Taliban etc are effective. It’s hard to find soldiers to fight them, if it means your family will be slaughtered. This is how Islam has spread ever since the time of Mohammed: pure terrorism.
