SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Springfield Police responded to shots fired in the 1100 block of North Oak Park Drive shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday night.

Derek Palmer, who lives just down the street from where police were investigating, witnessed the episode and explained what he heard to KY3 on Saturday night.

"I heard a couple gun shots go off, came outside to check it out, and you had a guy and somebody in a car arguing for a little bit, you heard a few more gunshots go off and then the car sped off," says Palmer.

Police confirmed that several shots were fired, but no one was injured. Police say the investigation is ongoing.

On Sunday, neighbors were just glad no one was hurt.

Newt Wilson says he's an Iraq War veteran who's lived in the neighborhood for about a year and a half. Wilson says he was in his house when he heard the first shot coming from the street right in front of his home.

"Was that a shotgun?" Wilson recalls, "and I come out, and I see two guys over here wrestling."

Wilson says when he came outside, he had his handgun with him.

Wilson says he shouted at the men fighting in the street, telling them to stop, "and there was two more shots and then when he come around that car, he had a gun pointed at me."

Wilson says he feared for his life, looking down the barrel of a shotgun.

"[The gun was] pointed, pumped, at me... and that's when I shot three shots. Bam, bam, bam," says Wilson.

Wilson says it was a split second decision.

"I surprised him," says Wilson, "He dropped the gun, and they fled."

Wilson says the man barely got into a car as the driver sped off.

I hope by “barely got into the car” that meant the thug was mortally wounded.

It means his buds were ready to ditch him when the bullets started flying.

TV station KY3 Springfield, Missouri (NBC Affiliate) is trying to hype gun violence.

One headline:

Rise in gun violence is troubling trend in Springfield

New reports of gun violence show up almost every night of the week. In a year in which we've also had a near-record number of homicides in Springfield, this a trend to know as we move into the holidays.

.

The headline of another report:

Family of killed man sues police and Walmart

trying to hype? I moved out of there 4 years ago and this is unbelievable.

“Greene County 9-1-1 call-takers have taken 363 calls for “shots fired” in the last six months. That’s a 22 percent increase over the same period last year.”

“Williams says, first, there is a connection in 99 percent of the homicides of the victims knowing their attackers. And second, they generally occur in one of about three situations: a bad domestic situation and, unfortunately, that includes children who are killed by parents; or someone who is involved in drugs — either buying, selling, using drugs in some way shape or form; or someone involved in criminal activity and then somebody involved in a gang.”

So it’s safe if you are a hermit. I wonder how many illegals are there now. I wonder how much the crime rate
has gone up all over the nation in the last 6 years.

This is where I used to live.
