Southwest Ohio authorities said Friday they arrested a man with a loaded handgun painted red to resemble a toy.
The arrest came just four days after legislation was introduced in the state to require that lookalike guns be brightly colored or otherwise marked. Ohio lawmakers took up the bill following two police fatal shootings of young people carrying lookalike guns in recent months.
Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Neil said it's "a scary thought" that guns would be painted to mislead police.
Police responding to a call about a man with a gun said they found Orlando Lowery, 23, with a .380-caliber handgun painted red and 9 grams of cocaine. No attorney was listed for Lowery, who was jailed on a concealed weapons charge and a drug count.
The bill, introduced Monday by Rep. Alicia Reece, would require all BB guns, air rifles and airsoft guns stand out in color or have prominent fluorescent strips. The Cincinnati Democrat named the bill after 22-year-old John Crawford III, who was carrying an air rifle this summer in a suburban Dayton Wal-Mart store when he was fatally shot by police. Police said they thought Crawford had an assault rifle. Last month, a 12-year-old boy carrying a pellet gun in Cleveland was fatally shot by police.
The legislation was modeled after a California law. Several other states and cities have similar laws.
Some opponents of the bill have expressed skepticism about whether such measures would be effective in preventing fatal shootings, and some have suggested that criminals would try to disguise weapons to cause police to hesitate.

Perfectly logical extension of their "reasoning". Like thinking they will stop graffiti by banning sales of spray paint to people under 18.
I think what is going to happen is a law requiring toy guns have some sort of funny shaped part that is not on any real gun. Or, just as likely, a ban on toy guns.
And because of this police will die and there will no mention of this in the MSN.
Leave it up to these very stupid politicians to “TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM”. Since it’s illegal for law abiding citizens to conceal carry, these stupid politicians are saying that “ALL FAKE GUNS MUST BE PAINTED RED”. And because criminals, who by the way, don’t obey laws, will paint their real weapons “RED”. Why none of these politicians figured that out, before making that a “LAW”, is beyond my comprehension. But no one has accused any of these politicians to have “COMMON SENSE”, or the brains GOD gave a rabbit.
Actually if more criminals did this you’d be able to spot their guns much easier.
They're not stupid; they knew it perfectly well. The idea wasn't to solve a problem, but to put forth the appearance of having solved a problem.
That will shirley solve the problem.
Well, that was a long time coming.
What idiot thought painting it orange makes it a toy?
Cops stand down!
Idiot lawmakers, idiot public.
I like the way you think.
Look to a ban on replicas.
Idiots.
I think Dillinger made a break out using a pistol carved of wood.
OMG! Ban wood! Ban Carving! Ban Shoe polish!
Real or toy?
You mean like this ?
How about just making a law that says it’s illegal to shoot innocent people? That should take care of all of it.
“The legislation was modeled after a California law. Several other states and cities have similar laws.”
Never, I repeat never, “model” any law anywhere after anything our a$$holes up in Sacramento concoct. If you think you are mentally unstable, go download the “flowchart” they’ve come up with to determine if a particular gun is an “assault weapon.” The chart will convince you that you are still sane, but you will have a huge migraine for your introspection. If that doesn’t do it for you, might I suggest the rules for an “en banc” in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Best and brightest doesn’t even break the surface with either group.
A few years ago “tagging” (graffiti vandalism) was rampant along Southern CA freeways. It has been greatly reduced by prosecuting, and sending up the river, a few of the most egregious offenders.
Cons have also made guns out of soap.
