China Conducts Third Test Of Game-Changing Missile
Investor's Business Daily ^ | December 9, 2014 | IBD EDITORIALS

Defense Threat: China conducts its third test in a year of a hypersonic glide vehicle designed to evade our missile and other defense systems, including the Aegis defense system guarding our carrier battle groups.

As we downsize our military, scale back weapons procurement and development, China proceeds at top speed towards weapons designed to counter our once-huge technical advantage and qualitative superiority. Case in point is the third flight test of a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV), dubbed the WU-14 by the Pentagon, following earlier tests on Jan. 9 and Aug. 7 of this year.

The U.S. Navy is particularly concerned, as an HGV would be a potent weapon against U.S. carrier battle groups in the western Pacific.

A Chinese anti-ship ballistic missile — the road-mobile DF-21D, called a "carrier killer" by some — already poses a potent threat, but it is countered by our extraordinarily capable sea-based Aegis missile defense.

big whoop. its already as obsolete as the shuttle. over half will fail to launch or break up on reentry. another 30% will fail to hit their target. leaves us with 20% we can easily knock out with our new ship based lasers.

China is “innovating” thirty years in the past. The U.S. is innovating 30 years in the future.

China’s rise is becoming more freighting by the day.

Indeed. Very freighting.

This was so easily predicted.

That was my thought, haven’t we been successfully shooting down missiles and artillery shells with lasers for over a decade now? You’d think if we were doing that then, by now we could outfit each nuclear ship with a laser pretty quick if it could just get congressional funding.

Last year the DF-21 wa all the rage. Now we know it can be defeated with existing systems.

Now the big deal is the WU-14.

Can anyone explain to me why it's launch vehicle cannot be defeated at apogee?

I sometimes think Lockheed and Boeing write many of these articles about the emerging Chinese "parity".

Want to know what a REAL Hypersonic Strike Vehicle looks like? Go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WaveRider

The X-51 can be deployed like a standoff Cruise Missile from a mid-sized platform.

Around 15 years ago I remember liberals chortling at any suggestion that Slick Willy sold access to missile technology in exchange for foreign campaign donations.

And carrier-based aircraft could never sink battleships, as it was said before Pearl Harbor.

Oh, I get it. Do not dismiss a potential enemy's capability out of hand, but research it and know a solution before the shooting starts.

What do you think these new laser cannons are for? Hypersonics.

And what do you think Obama’s budget cuts are for? What ships and how many will carry them? Think Jinny Carter on steroids.

I wonder how well hypersonic missiles are able to do midflight course corrections to evade projectiles from rail guns.

The US Navy must have been way ahead of this breaking news from China because CNN just now released this article to counter it: http://www.cnn.com/2014/12/11/tech/innovation/navy-laser-weapon/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

I had heard of the navy using lasers in tests, but nothing that had gone official yet.
