BEIJING China's new stealth fighter could certainly "take down" its opponent in the sky, the president of China's top aircraft maker said on Tuesday, referring to its U.S.-made counterpart.
Lin Zuoming, president of Aviation Industry Corp of China (Avic), which developed the J-31 stealth fighter, made the remarks in an interview on state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV).
"When it takes to the sky, it can definitely take it down," he said, in a reference to the U.S.-made F-35. "That's a certainty."
Lin also emphasized the company's desire to compete with the United States in new markets, particularly countries the U.S. will not sell military equipment to as well as countries that cannot afford the pricier F-35.
"The next-generation air forces that are unable to buy the F-35 have no way to build themselves up. We don't believe the situation should be that way," he said.
"This world should be balanced," Lin added. "Good things shouldn't all be pushed to one party."
China unveiled the highly anticipated twin-engine fighter jet at an air show last month, a show of muscle during a visit to the country by U.S. President Barack Obama.
Stealth aircraft are key to China developing the ability to carry out both offensive and defensive operations, the Pentagon said in a report about developments in China's military.

Slick should be proud.
But not, apparently, the F-22. The J-35 is a disaster, that will be much more costly than the F-22 would have been had a full production run of the latter occurred.
The only question is whether Bubba Clinton or Dorkbama sold the plans to the Chinese.
As will be Prescott Bush and the entire China promoting Bush family.
Just because one copies the basic shape of an aircraft, doesn’t mean it has the same capabilities...
There are many components to “stealth”...
George H. W. Bush and a lot of republicans are responsible too. Yeah, I know Billy sold military intelligence out to the Chinese but republicans are just as responsible for making China the industrial and military power they’ve become.
China was basically a 3rd world nation before all these new world order clowns decided to redistribute our wealth with their unfair free trade agreements. Imagine if we had not sent so many of our manufacturing jobs to China. Republicans and demos alike redistributed our wealth.
My thought exactly.
Traitorous rapist.
It goes far beyond just making a plane that looks like ours...an effective fighting platform starts with the pilot and his/her abilities. Ours are top in the world. I’d love to see those Chinese idiots try and go against our guys in that knock off rust bucket.
I’ll bet that the engines the ChiComs are using in that plane are very weak as far as thrust go’s or they would have went with a single engine.
I sure would love to see that jet go up against an F15 Eagle or an F16. We would see how good it is in a hurry.
Isn’t everything BVR these days anyway?
I don’t think there has been a within gun range dogfight since they filmed “Top Gun.”
Apart from the intakes (same as F-35) and engines (MiG-29), the J-31 is a closer copy of the YF-22 (not F-22) than any other stealth fighter.
The J-31 doesn’t have vectored thrust engines like the YF-22 a major difference.
BTTT on both your comments...
The USAF has been working on air superiority doctrine, capability and execution for decades...in doing so, pilots are of the highest caliber.
Engine technology is still one of those areas where we hold a very distinct advantage over just about every potential adversary...
No engine(s)? Lawn dart...
The Chi-coms have already hacked the F-35 avionics package and will launch the virus at the appropriate time.
Chi-coms = Cylons?
Complete and utter propaganda. Read this and relax folks...
From a CNN article:
a senior MiG official stated no, as far as I know they [the Chinese] completed this design themselves, and they seem to have done a good job on their own.
The MiG official may be correct. An aircraft of this type designed with Russian assistance would probably perform better.
The FC-31s flight routine shows that it bleeds too much energy so when it enters into a turn it begins to lose altitude. Even during straight and level flight the pilot has to engage the engines afterburners in order to keep the aircraft from sinking to a lower altitude. These are defects in the aircrafts aerodynamic design that a Russian design team would not have made.
Western aerospace analysts point out that the FC-31 flown at Zhuhai is a clean jet in that it is not armed, which means that an aircraft configured for a real mission and fitted with weapons would be even heavier and would perform even worse.
