Nineteen people were hospitalized early Sunday after an intentional chlorine leak at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare during the 2014 Midwest FurFest, public safety officials said.

The leak, reported about 12:45 a.m. Sunday, caused a complete evacuation of the hotel at 9300 W. Bryn Mawr Avenue. The hotel was hosting the Midwest FurFest convention. Attendees dress up like furry animals and celebrate art, literature and performance based on anthropomorphic animals, according to the convention's website.

Discussions on fannish boards suggest that this was someone with either a personal grudge against someone or a grudge against furries in general.

If the former, well, the Furry community is well known for its’ drama and cat-fights (pardon the term)

If the latter, likely some shonen anime fans, who may have been hit on by gay furries while cosplaying bishonen (”pretty boys”)

Always conservative but now a cynic. I’m convinced that we as a society are being played by the Edward Bernays propaganda types that scheme and manipulate reality to suit their own interests.

The masses and people are clueless and the last to know what is reality. The schemers know how to play us and the system. I don’t believe anything from the MSM.

What the heck is “powdered chlorine”? Chlorine at room temperature is a gas. I suspect they found some powder containing bound chlorine which when heated or acted upon by another agent could give off chlorine gas.

I guess reporters do not have to know anything about chemistry and are no longer required to check facts?

Ohmigoodness, your post totally proves that Freepers are the most interesting people in the world, because I have NO CLUE what you just said!

I’m just hoping everyone will be OK and the perp will be caught.

Like I said on the other thread chlorine gas is no joke.

Of course it isn’t a joke, it’s a heinous crime or attempt at one. But the furry thing is funny.

Could be, I have been to “cons” before and sometimes the “factions” seem to hate each other for no good reason.

One of the better Castle episodes featured these ‘furbies’.

Not to be a dweeb, but... Powdered chlorine is commonly sold as “ shock”
Very common, it’s like tablets but ground up in a single dose bag ( small ) to shock a swimming pool into shape if it’s been neglected.
You open the bag and sprinkle it into the pool.

P.s.
If you mix that and break fluid, that’s bad medicine.
Thank god there was none of that.
