As a former Republican leader in the House and Senate, Trent Lott of Mississippi says he knows that party leaders dont seek advice. But he had plenty on Thursday for Speaker John A. Boehner and Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republicans who will be running Congress or trying to come January.
In short: Lead the growing ranks of hard-line conservatives who have often called the shots, dont follow them, so Republicans can get things done with President Obama.
The leadership is going to have to find a way to deal sternly with some of these members, Mr. Lott, who was the No. 2 House Republican in the 1980s and later both the minority and majority leader in the Senate, said at a breakfast with reporters. He added, I wouldnt put up with some of the stuff they do.
That stuff includes shutting down the government last year in a futile attempt to get the president to agree to repeal his own health care law. Mr. Lott called the shutdown a lie to the American people and I just dont think you can tolerate that.
With the influx of newly elected conservatives, the leadership should move quickly to co-opt them, bring them in, pull them in close to the leadership, Mr. Lott said. Dont let them drift over to the far-right flank.

Of Mr. Boehner, Mr. Lott said: Were going to have to see the speaker really move aggressively and try to keep his conference moving in the right direction."
That is, a left direction!

Trent Lott who let himself be run out of town for an innocent comment of respect. Yes, listen to him.

It was because of Trent Lott's leadership that Bill Clinton was not convicted after his impeachment.
Go pound it, Trent.

Oh, yes, ♫Let's all fol-ler Chester!♫ Another ePub failure, resurrected and trotted out to wheeze forth dust and poor advice as was Trent Lott. Note how much respect their weak political ideologies garnered them later in their lives...
